Sumário

Renewable gases with particular emphasis on hydrogen, have been assumed as central in decarbonization strategies together with newer and better CO2 capture processes. With the target to effective mitigation of climate change impacts, a strategy must be built based on renewable energy sources, keeping also in mind the energy efficiency and the benefits for the energy consumer. Therefore, the Structured R&D&I Project HyGreen&LowEmissions - Tackling Climate Change Impacts: the role of Green Hydrogen production, storage and use together with low emissions energy systems aims at contributing to the development and optimization of systems of Green Hydrogen production & storage, and CO2 capture and conversion (e.g. power to methane) technologies. Other strategies for mitigation and personal protection against climate change will be addressed in this project, namely to enhance the efficiency of combustion systems lowering emissions and to develop Thermal Protective Clothing to improve the safety of workers exposed to thermal stress environments, including firefighters. This consortium builds-up on a high commitment of CEFT (Leader of the project - Transport Phenomena Research Center), LEPABE (Laboratory of Process Engineering, Environment, Energy) and LSRE-LCM (Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering/ LCM - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials, an Associate Laboratory) and CEF.UP (Center for Economics and Finance at UPorto) complementing the strategic objectives of the R&D units for 2020-2023. The first three teams work within the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto campus and CEF.UP in the neighbour Faculty of Economy of University of Porto. The 4 units belong to University of Porto, the unique beneficiary. The application is built over several projects and work in progress that have been carried out in collaboration between CEFT and the other R&D Units, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM and to extend collaboration in a near future with CEF.UP in the economic analysis of the most promising processes. Further complementary competences within these R&D Units will be put together to reinforce synergies. The activities proposed are aligned with the European Green Deal (contributing to an effective production, storage and use of Green Hydrogen and to a decrease of greenhouse gas emissions), but at the same time associated with the concern of adaptation to climate change (improvement of firefighting strategies and equipment) and societal transformation (activities on Education & Social Awareness). The Structured R&D&I Project HyGreen &Low Emissions is considered strongly aligned with at least four priority domains (“Domínios Prioritários”) of the “Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) NORTE”, namely “Recursos do Mar e Economia”, “Indústrias da mobilidade e ambiente”, “Sistemas agroambientais e alimentação” and “Sistemas avançados de produção”. Due to a strong connection between the five activities proposed, leading to an effective research & development coherence, this proposal adopted only one Research Line. The proposal global objectives are, together with specific objectives distributed into five main activities defined towards the growth of Portugal North Region: 1 - Green Energy Production 1.1 Power-to-H2-to Power - Production & Storage of Green H2 1.2 Power-to-methane 1.3 Green hydrogen production from industrial wastewater 2 – CO2 Capture 2.1 CO2 capture for biofuel production by microalgae 2.2 CO2 capture and photoreduction for greenhouse mitigation 3 - Efficient Combustion/ Public Health/Thermal Protective Clothing 3.1 Efficient Combustion 3.2 Public Health/Thermal Protective Clothing 4. - Life Cicle Assessment & Economic Analysis 4.1 Life Cicle Assessment of the most promising processes 4.2 Economic Analysis of low carbon buseness models 5 - Education & Social Awareness 5.1 Training actions on Green Hydrogen & Low emissions energy processes; 5.2 HyGreen&Low Emissions energy processes: High Schools workshops in the North region; 5.3 HyGreen&Low Emissions Summer Schools; 5.4 Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation
