This Project is fully aligned with RIS3. It is based on a multimodal translational approach to address cutting edge developments on neurosciences, oncology and surgical sciences, comprising 3 research lines: Research Line 1 Glial function in health and disease: unravelling novel mechanisms to understand neural function and personalized therapeutic targets of diseases of the central nervous system The common element that aggregates the research efforts in this RL is the neuron-glia interactions during the lifespan in health and disease. While relatively recent, it is not new that glia have extended from being “supportive” cells for neurons, “filling” the space in between, to rather active and essential cells for the proper functioning of the central nervous system (CNS). Novel emerging data are currently addressing on particular mechanisms in which glial cells are determinant in mediating deleterious effects to the CNS.
