Job description:The National Museum of Natural History and Science is seeking a highly qualified PhD researcher in the field of Botany, preferably specialised in taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of bryophytes. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting and overseeing an innovative and original scientific research program, combining the care and promotion of its two Botanical Gardens (Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and Jardim Botânico Tropical) as major infrastructures for research and teaching, with the study of bryophyte biodiversity and conservation strategies, particularly in Portugal and African regions. The successful candidate is also expected to actively contribute to other areas within the mission of the Museum, including mentoring, public education and outreach, and exhibitions, by working together with the Museum staff. Scientific profile: We seek candidates with a strong commitment to a vision of natural history collections as a key resource for interdisciplinary research, education and culture. Applicants are required to have the following attributes:PhD in Ecology, Botany, with a focus on bryophyte taxonomy, ecology, and conservation.Relevant experience in promoting and coordinating Botanical Gardens within an academic environment.Proficiency in species identification, herbarium management, database systems, and GIS.Experience in teaching botany and mentoring students.Strong communication and outreach skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and promote environmental awareness.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and lead research projects.A track record in publishing scientific articles, showcasing the capability to provide innovative perspectives to the field. Rationale:The appointment of an Assistant Researcher for promoting our Botanical Gardens as scientific infrastructures for the study of conservation and biodiversity at an international level, is crucial for the National Museum of Natural History and Science to uphold its mission in biodiversity research and conservation efforts. Selecting a qualified researcher for our curatorial position recognizes that an active research program is vital to enhance the dynamism and relevance of our collections, to guide their growth  and to ensure their scientific relevance. The other required skill is justified by our collection of bryophytes (Portugal’s largest) and their critical role in ecosystem functioning, serving as valuable indicators of environmental health. By investing in research and conservation efforts focused on bryophytes, we can deepen the understanding of these important organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit. By analysing how various species may respond to changing environmental factors, such as temperature and precipitation patterns, we can proactively implement conservation strategies to mitigate biodiversity loss. These predictive models provide valuable insights into the potential impacts of climate change on species distributions and inform targeted conservation efforts to safeguard vulnerable populations. The selected candidate is anticipated to contribute to the advancement of this research area within the Museum, using our existing equipment facilities and enhancing the institution’s capabilities with the acquisition of new equipment. Additionally, the Assistant Researcher will contribute to educational initiatives and public outreach programs, fostering connections between people and plants and promoting sustainable practices for the benefit of present and future generations.
