Context and rationale for the hiring need | CERIS research is linked to promote livable cities aiming to shape the urban well-being, namely foster research for sustainable transport systems addressing the people’s need for an efficient accessibility to accomplish a high-level urban mobility. Unprecedented urban expansion necessitates innovative and systemic solutions for sustainable mobility. The rise of electric and autonomous vehicles demands expertise in cutting-edge technologies, the use of digital technologies and their potential to increase accessibility and reduce travel needs, as well as the integration of shared and active modes (bicycles, pedestrians, scooters, among others). Urban mobility is pivotal for social equity, influencing access to essential services, while well-designed transport systems contribute to economic competitiveness and much higher quality of life. Position importance for CERIS | Hiring a researcher for the position in Advanced Transport Systems is essential for continuing to diversify the innovation approaches to the system as a whole, pointed to develop groundbreaking research and providing excellent training conditions at the post-graduation level in CERIS’ systems, management and transport fields. The aim of this hiring is two-fold: (i) to incorporate an experienced researcher able to train and capacitate CERIS researchers in the use of the available advanced tools to deal with the complexity of the system involved; (ii) to conduct pioneer research on the complex urban and regional territory tissues taking advantage of the new tools (from advanced econometric methods, machine learning techniques to artificial intelligence) to transform the gridlocks of the human and natural spaces. Accomplishing these goals will contribute to CERIS continuing to develop leading-edge research in the field of Transport Systems. Researcher functions | The hired researcher will have several assigned tasks: (i) assisting the senior researchers in the daily management of data management and modelling related to the activities described; (ii) maintaining and developing new competencies in using advanced approaches and tools for planning and operate transport systems; (iii) extending the use of this knowledge by promote active collaboration in systems, management and transport fields; (iv)  the development of own research and consultancy projects and the supervision of postgraduate students; (v) participating in preparation of project applications in the areas Systems Management and Transportation Systems. Scientific profile | The candidate for this position should have: (i) Strong background in urban mobility, transportation planning, and systems management framework, with preference given to advanced skills in transport demand modeling and spatial analysis and simulation of urban systems related to a strong background in the engineering perspective; (ii) a solid experience in the development of applied research, demonstrated through the development of his own MSc and PhD theses, the participation in and leadership of R&D projects, the supervision of students and the publication of relevant articles; (iii) a demonstrated experience on the main tools related to advanced econometric modeling, simulation, AI and Machine learning approaches; (iv) and a scientific project promoting practical research activities in transport systems widening and complementing the current research strands within CERIS. Hiring process | CERIS will launch an international competition for hiring the most talented researcher for this position, that will be largely advertised through national and European EU platforms and web portals (e.g. Euraxess). Specific requirements will be established in the announcement, such as the development of a scientific project focused on practical research, the demonstration of previous experience on developing research activities with advanced tools (R&D projects and publications), the demonstration of experience in leading teams (coordination of R&D projects and MSc/PhD supervision) and the minimum recognition of the scientific community through citations in outstanding (Q1) ISI/SCOPUS Journals demonstrating the potential of the work done to proceed in a demanding career.
