Scientific profile and tasks to be assigned :The Assistant Professor to be hired will spearhead a cutting-edge research program focused on elucidating how alterations in biochemical processes drive the onset and progression of diseases. The primary emphasis will be on metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric disorders, infectious diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases or other ageing-related pathologies. This research program will delve into biochemical pathways, biomarkers, interaction networks, physiological readouts, as well as genomic and proteomic profiling to unravel the biochemical underpinnings of these conditions. The collaboration with clinicians and the extension to human models will be appreciated. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to implement a dynamic research line, to secure funding from various sources, and to foster international collaborations to enhance the impact and reach of the research program. The Assistant Professor to be hired will supervise master’s and PhD students, thus contributing to training the next generation of scientists. Delving into these mechanisms allows unravelling how diseases manifest and progress, as well as pinpointing potential therapeutic targets crucial for the development of effective treatments, both broad-spectrum interventions and tailored, precision medicine approaches customized to individual patient needs. We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor with a robust technical know-how in biochemistry, including innovative techniques, and a strong scientific background in their field of study, who will possess the expertise to harness technical innovations and leverage emerging scientific concepts in biochemistry of disease. The ultimate aim is to translate discoveries into clinical applications that enhance patient outcomes and contribute to public health, a major objective of CIBB.Biochemistry is one of the scientific areas of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, through its Life Sciences Department. The Assistant Professor of Biochemistry of Disease will strengthen this scientific area through the development of innovative methodologies and the implementation of original research lines to understand biochemical processes at the basis of disease pathogenesis. The Faculty of Sciences and Technology will capitalize on the know-how of such a researcher also to train the next generation of biochemists and biologists in methods and research questions at the forefront of biochemical sciences.
