The selected candidate needs to have a strong background in discrete/combinatorial optimization as well as in integer linear programming, polyhedral theory, network flows and graph theory.Besides a good background in discrete/combinatorial optimization, and in order for the OR group to grow and deal with emerging and topical areas of optimization, the selected candidate must be acquainted with (that is, to have published in) the area of robust optimization which extends the area of discrete optimization to model worst-case scenarios. Robust optimization is relevant in many areas arising in real world applications such as logistics, schedule in healthcare and fire management.In addition, it is expected that the selected candidate collaborates with other members of the OR group in the study of valid inequalities and extended formulations for discrete robust optimization problems, and the study of pertinent robust variants of problems being investigated in the group, such as logistic problems, healthcare scheduling and forest management.The selected candidate should also participate, and in some cases coordinate, knowledge transfer projects for the productive sector that the Department or research unit intends to continue to establish with various companies and/or institutions. This has been a practice developed for many years, but due to the departure of some members, it has been less active.Past and current collaborations are with the Portuguese Navy, and several public or private hospitals, such as INEM, PORTUCEL, REFER, UNICER.The CV of the selected candidate needs to include a list of high-level publications in the target area as well as membership in international research networks. The selected candidate is expected to form a research pole that would attract scientists from abroad for research collaboration, and to be active in the organization of conferences in her/his area of expertise. Relevant supervision experience of graduate students, enrolment on scientific activities with the industry and society, and experience in editorial roles will also be welcome. Experience in writing grant proposals to secure funding for future research initiatives will be much valued.In the department, the candidate will be expected to teach courses in the area of Operations Research, and Discrete Optimization the Master’s and in specialized courses in the PhD program in line with the scientific culture of excellence promoted by CMAFcIO. It is relevant to have his/her contribution in supervising Master´s and PhD students not only for her/his specific competences, but above all to attract and fix new students.Also, and since this is a position of Associate Professor, the selected candidate will also be invited to join departmental and faculty duties such as coordinating cycles or even being a member of the scientific council. Moreover, she/he will be in charge of academic responsibilities (at the department or faculty level) and be part of decision making.
