The prospective employee will be responsible for conducting scientific research in the Meteorology and Oceanic areas using in-situ, remote detected and numerical simulated data with the aim of improving the understanding of the geophysical processes dealing with dynamics and heat fluxes at ocean-atmosphere interface. The selected candidate should be able to:. set-up numerical models, namely pre-processing the numerical simulations boundary and initial conditions and configuring the models’ physical options.. run the numerical simulations in High-Performance-Computing (HPC) infrastructures.. post-process the numerical simulated data, remote detected data, and in-situ data with software such as Python, NCO, CDO, MATLAB, R.The studies will be focused on the north Atlantic processes at meso-scales and near Madeira archipelago at very high (less or equal to 1 km) spatial scales. It is expected that the conducted research will be presented in national and international conferences and in specialised peer reviewed journals.The candidate must hold a doctoral degree in the Meteorology, Oceanography or in related areas, proficiency in Earth System data analysis, and have demonstrated scientific experience by publications in peer reviewed indexed journals and presentations in scientific conferences.The advised position will contribute to establish an Ocean-Atmosphere research unit at University of Madeira, which is in line with the recently proposed undergraduate Ocean Sciences and Technology degree (in accreditation phase). These initiatives aim at the training and qualification of human resources, development of scientific and technical research and the valorisation of ocean and atmosphere related knowledge in an archipelago where the geosciences research is poorly established. Furthermore, this is also a region where numerous activities, such as fisheries, tourism, and aircrafts take-offs and landings, strongly depend on the upper ocean or the lower atmosphere environmental conditions which turns even more pertinent the establishment of a regional research unit where these themes are studied. Moreover, it is also relevant to assess in detail the global warming effects and its consequences in the sub-tropical islands, as some studies point the subtropical regions as zones of enhanced warming and dryness in future scenarios, associated with a poleward extension of Hadley cell. This assessment will permit to propose mitigating measures of the warming effects.The two proposed additional Host Institutions will collaborate with the candidate in achieving the above mentioned aims, namely, using ocean collected data with cutting-edge instruments in Madeira region by ARDITI/OOM and taking profit of Institute Dom Luiz/University of Lisbon vast and excellent research in Geophysical Sciences, namely in atmosphere modelling.
