i) Description of the tasks: This position will play a key role in advancing the research capabilities of the Department of Social, Political and Territorial Sciences, particularly in the area of decision support systems with a strong emphasis on public policy and governance through data-driven approaches. The incumbent will be tasked with leading comprehensive empirical studies and analyses using advanced quantitative methods to address the complex challenges facing the social, political and territorial sciences. This role involves a significant commitment to academia, where the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, planning and delivering courses in quantitative methods, providing students with a deep understanding of how quantitative analysis can be used effectively in policy making and governance. The candidate will also play an active role in supervising and mentoring student research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, guiding them through the complexities of empirical research and data analysis in the social sciences. Furthermore, the position requires active participation in and contribution to interdisciplinary projects collaborating with colleagues from diverse fields within the department and the research unit, promoting an environment of intellectual exchange to facilitate the integration of different academic perspectives to foster a holistic approach to research and teaching in public policy. The role extends beyond traditional academic boundaries, encouraging the candidate to actively engage with external stakeholders, such as policymakers, community groups, and other relevant organizations, thereby underscoring the importance of Evidence-Based Policy. This external engagement is crucial for ensuring that the research and teaching within the department and the RU remain relevant, impactful, and aligned with the evolving needs and challenges of society. In addition to the aforementioned responsibilities, a significant aspect of this position involves close collaboration with DSS-LAB, a strategic initiative within GOVCOPP. The incumbent will play a key role in consolidating, complementing, and continuing the work of DSS-LAB, which is central to disseminating research outcomes and developing decision support methodologies and tools across various application domains. By actively contributing to the strategic development and continuity of DSS-LAB, the candidate will not only support GOVCOPP but also advance this critical tool for decision-making in Portugal. ii) Scientific profile required: A candidate with a strong academic background in social sciences, with particular expertise in quantitative methods, applied spatial analysis as related to decision support systems, data science, and public policy. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required, along with a demonstrated track record of research in these areas. The candidate should possess skills in statistical analysis, data modeling, and an ability to apply these in practical policy-making contexts. Experience in interdisciplinary research, along with a commitment to high-quality teaching and student engagement, is essential. The candidate should have the capability to translate complex research findings into actionable policy recommendations and effectively communicate these to both academic and non-academic audiences. 3. Rationale for the Need: The establishment of this position is crucial for the Department of Social, Political, and Territorial Sciences to enhance its research and teaching portfolio in decision support systems and public policy. This aligns with the strategic direction of the GOVCOPP´s commitment to an evidence-based policy approach. The role is designed to address the growing importance of data-driven approaches in policy-making and governance, fulfilling the department´s commitment to integrating diverse academic disciplines around the core theme of public policy, ensuring that the department remains at the forefront of innovative approaches in social, political, and territorial sciences. Furthermore, it will enhance the department´s ability to contribute to societal well-being and sustainable development through impactful research and education. In addition, the establishment of this position is also a proactive response to the reforms and the departure of key personnel who are involved in these areas. The new role will not only fill the critical gaps left by these reforms but will also bring fresh perspectives and innovative methodologies to the department. This transition represents an opportunity to reinforce and expand our capabilities in decision support systems and public policy research.
