The rapidly evolving field of mass spectrometry (MS) and lipidomics is crucial for understanding the complex roles of lipids in health and disease. By identifying specific lipid alterations, researchers can uncover novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The MS group at the chemistry department, within LAQV, being at the forefront of MS, biochemical and biomedical research, requires an individual with a deep understanding of MS and lipidomics to expand its research capabilities. The selected candidate will fill a critical gap in the (Bio)Chemistry & OMICS group, a multidisciplinary research group of the Thematic Line of Health & Wellbeing of the LAQV/Aveiro, enabling it to stay competitive and contribute significantly to the advancement of MS and lipidomics research. This position is essential for leveraging state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to address pressing scientific questions in the field, thus enhancing the LAQV´s and the UA’s contribution to science and medicine. We are seeking an exceptional Research Scientist with a specialization in Lipidomics to join our dynamic team at LAQV/Aveiro.Scientific ProfileThe individual we are seeking will play a pivotal role in advancing our research objectives in the field of mass spectrometry and lipidomics. This person will be responsible for leading sophisticated MS research projects aimed at uncovering the intricate roles of lipids in various diseases and lipidomics profiling. A critical aspect of their work will involve developing and refining mass spectrometry-based analytical techniques to achieve detailed lipid profiling, which is essential for unravelling the complex biochemical pathways in which lipids are involved. Their efforts will also extend to the analysis and interpretation of lipidomic data, requiring a profound understanding of bioinformatics tools and methodologies. The collaborative nature of this position means the candidate will work closely with interdisciplinary teams, contributing their lipidomics expertise to enrich broader research endeavours. This engagement will also include organizing and participating in workshops and seminars, further establishing our institution´s leadership in the lipidomics field. The ideal candidate will have completed a PhD in Biochemistry or a related discipline, with a significant portion of their academic and professional career dedicated to lipidomics and the use of mass spectrometry in biological research. Their publication record should reflect significant contributions to the field, showcasing expertise in lipid analysis, mass spectrometry techniques, and data interpretation. Beyond technical skills, we are looking for someone who possesses the ability to lead, inspire, and innovate within our research community. Experience in organizing scientific workshops and a commitment to scientific community engagement are also required.Scientific Profile Required:PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field with a strong focus on lipidomics and mass spectrometry.Proven track record of publications in lipidomics, demonstrating significant contributions to the field.Expertise in mass spectrometry techniques, including hands-on experience with instrument operation, maintenance, and method development.Strong analytical skills in bioinformatics for lipidomics data analysis.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience in leading and participating in multidisciplinary research teams.RationaleThe rationale for hiring a senior scientist specializing in lipidomics stems from the discipline´s critical role in advancing our understanding of complex biological systems and disease mechanisms. Lipidomics, the comprehensive analysis of lipids in biological systems, is pivotal for identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets, especially in the context of metabolic and degenerative diseases. LAQV´s commitment to leading-edge research in biochemistry and biomedical sciences necessitates the integration of lipidomics expertise to enhance our analytical capabilities and research output. This position requires a unique combination of deep scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and a collaborative spirit. Given the complex nature of lipidomics and its crucial role in understanding disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets, a candidate with a comprehensive academic and professional background in this field is essential. The chosen individual will not only contribute to advancing our research capabilities but also play a pivotal role in mentoring junior scientists and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within our team. The recruitment of a senior scientist with deep expertise in lipidomics is a strategic move to enhance our research capabilities, foster innovation, and maintain our leadership in the scientific community.
