Sumário

The prospective employee will be responsible for leading projects and research on music creation and performance, and for contributing towards the emerging area of artistic research in the research unit. The activities will be framed by the research group “Creation, Performance and Artistic Research” of the research unit Inet-MD. This group, at Inet-MD’s University of Aveiro branch, presently integrates 26 members, including 2 non-tenured researchers, as well as 61 PhD candidates. Given its vitality and engagement with topics that intersect various artistic domains besides music, the Inet-MD group members have ensured a significant impact through their international publications, projects and activities, including presentations of innovative artistic products and methodologies. The activities of prospective researcher should further this impact, encompassing four main research and project-leading perspectives, which include:Research in performance practice: focusing on understanding historical and current approaches to musical performance and applying practice-based and artistic-research methodologies that may contribute with innovative and experimental perspectives to the study of Western art music and contemporary styles, addressing the interface between performance, improvisation and composition.Interdisciplinary approaches: exploring how musical creation and performance interacts with other artistic disciplines, such as visual arts, literature, theater, dance or multimedia art, developing and testing collaborative methodologies and projects that may lead to the creation of innovative artistic outputs and resources.Music and technology: focusing on advancements in technology with applications in musical performance and composition, testing digital tools and software for music creation and composition, and investigating the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and their implications in the music industry and cultural diversity.Composition, performance and improvisation: studying the creative processes behind music composition, performance and improvisation through the exploration of techniques, concepts and collaborative music-making, developing resources and methodologies within a framework of cultural and artistic diversity, social engagement, and participatory and inclusive shared practices. The key responsibilities of the prospective researcher will include:1) developing and submitting national and international medium- and large-scale project applications, on topics associated with artistic research in music creation and performance2) identifying and studying emergent topics on artistic research, namely addressing interdisciplinary and experimental methodologies and resources, technology and musical performance, improvisation and composition, promoting inclusive and collaborative approaches4) testing technologic tools for musical performance and composition in diverse contexts, contributing to current and future national and international artistic-research projects promoted with artist-researchers from other disciplines5) promoting the presentation of artistic outputs and resources in academic and non-academic contexts, networking with artists and artist-researchers at national and international levelsPast and current research at Inet-MD has addressed topics such as conceptual approaches to artistic research, study and recreation of experimental Portuguese music theatre works, feedback techniques applied to improvisation, collaborative methods in performance and composition, development and testing electroacoustic tools in creation and performance, expanded instruments and extended techniques, among others. The range of topics is wide, and has gained the attention of the research community through publications in high-profile international journals and publishers, and the presentation of artistic-research outputs in video, audio and live formats. Its relevance for the research community of Inet-MD, notwithstanding the high number of researchers and PhD students associated with these research perspectives, has not led to a corresponding investment in tenured research positions, and this application offers a significant opportunity to further an area that has had a high impact in the unit’s current activities. Candidates should evidence:- a significant record of national and international scientific publications and artistic-research outputs in the area of music creation and performance;- prior experience in the development and implementation of research collaborations in diverse contexts, namely with international artist-researchers;- documented participation in national and international research projects;- experience in supervising masters’ and PhD students, and team mentoring and networking;- experience in the design and organization of public presentations of artistic-research outputs, and audio or audiovisual recording of these outputs.
