The establishment of the CESAM/Porto de Aveiro Chair in Estuarine and Harbour Hydrodynamics marks a significant step forward in addressing the complex challenges faced by the Port of Aveiro (PA), strategically located in the Ria de Aveiro (RA). This position, synchronizing with Research Cluster 3 (RC3) and Research Line 1 (RL1) at CESAM, is pivotal in advancing the understanding and management of estuarine and coastal systems, particularly under the escalating impacts of global climate change. Alignment with RC3 and RL1:The Chair´s focus on developing advanced numerical models to assess the impacts of human activities and seek the best solutions for port expansion works, directly supporting RC3´s mission to understand oceanic and atmospheric systems. The research will investigate the ecosystem processes in the RA, assessing human impacts such as dredging operations on these ecosystems, and evaluate the role of transitional ecosystems like RA in climate regulation. In alignment with RL1, this role will contribute to understanding the physical drivers of climate change as it relates to coastal and estuarine environments. The research will explore the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of the RA to climate change impacts, focusing on preserving its biodiversity and ecological functioning. Additionally, it will identify climate-smart practices for sustainable port operations, aiding in the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies. Tasks and Responsibilities: Advanced Numerical Modeling: The Chair will spearhead the development of sophisticated models to simulate the intricate hydrodynamic processes of RA, with a special focus on the processes affecting the port jurisdiction area. This includes integrating physical aspects such as tides, wave action, currents, and water quality, fundamental for forecasting and managing the estuarine environment´s response to various stimuli. Environmental Impact Studies: Conducting comprehensive assessments of the effects of port activities and future expansion works on natural events on the RA. This involves not only understanding the immediate impacts but also predicting long-term hydrodinamic consequences. Data Analysis and Scenario Simulations: Engaging in robust data analysis and scenario simulations under current and projected meteo-oceanographic conditions. This will aid in formulating effective strategies for port operation and expansion and environmental conservation. Stakeholder Collaboration and Communication: The Chair will engage extensively with stakeholders, including port authorities, environmental agencies, and the scientific community. This involves disseminating findings, fostering dialogue, and contributing to policy development through workshops and publications. Scientific Profile:The ideal candidate will have a PhD in marine sciences or a closely related field, combined with a profound understanding of coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics.Expertise in state-of-the-art numerical modeling software (Delft3D, XBeach, SWAN, WaveWatch III or similar) for hydrodynamic simulations and a track record in environmental impact studies related to estuarine and harbour areas.Experience in scenario exploration, particularly considering the effects of anthropogenic and climate change impacts on coastal systems, is crucial. State-of-the-Art and International Policies:The Chair´s work aligns with the latest trends in estuarine and coastal hydrodynamics research, which is increasingly focused on understanding the impacts of anthropogenic activities and climate change on coastal zones. The role involves applying cutting-edge techniques and methodologies to address issues like sea-level rise, increased storm intensity, and sediment dynamics. This position supports the European Union´s focus on sustainable coastal development as outlined in the European Green Deal and Blue Economy initiatives. It also contributes to the UN Sustainability Goals, particularly in fostering sustainable cities and communities and protecting life below water. The research and insights provided by the Chair will be invaluable to the Port of Aveiro, informing strategies to optimize harbor operations, enhance maritime safety, support future expansion or readjustment works of port infrastrutures, and ensure ecological sustainability in the face of environmental changes. Added Value for the Port of Aveiro:The Chair´s work will offer PA critical insights into optimizing harbor infrastrutures expansion/readjustment and operations in the face of environmental changes and increasing maritime traffic.By understanding and predicting the hydrodynamic behavior of RA, the research will aid in mitigating risks associated with sedimentation/accretion, erosion and flooding. The collaboration will enhance PA´s capacity to implement sustainable and resilient practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the port and the well-being of the surrounding ecosystems.
