The position of Principal Researcher in Health Sciences, Nursing Ethics and Palliative Care entails a multifaceted role encompassing both research and teaching responsibilities within the field. The holder of this position will coordinate independent research endeavors while also contributing to the academic development of students through teaching activities. This role is pivotal in advancing understanding and research practice in nursing ethics and palliative care, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.Scientific Profile:The Principal Researcher is expected to lead cutting-edge research initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of care and outcomes for individuals in need of palliative care, with a specific focus on the integration of palliative care in other healthcare settings, as well as in ethics in palliative and end-of-life care. Key responsibilities include:a) Conducting advanced research to explore various aspects of nursing ethics and palliative care, including but not limited to symptom management, end-of-life care, end-of-life decisions, ethical decision-making processes, caregiver support, effectiveness of interventions, outcome measurement, and improvement of quality of life.b) Collaborating with professionals across multiple disciplines, including medicine, psychology, social work, and public health, to address complex healthcare challenges and develop comprehensive care models and complex healthcare interventions.c) Securing research funding through competitive grant applications to expand existing and ongoing projects, consolidate a research team in the field of palliative care research and facilitate the exploration of new research avenues.d) Disseminating research findings through high-impact scientific publications, presentations at conferences, and engagement with relevant stakeholders to promote knowledge translation and implementation of evidence-based practices.The role of Principal Researcher in Health Sciences, Nursing Ethics and Palliative Care is essential in addressing the evolving needs of patients and families facing serious and life-limiting or life-threatening illness and end-of-life care. This position aligns with the broader mission of advancing healthcare delivery through interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practice. By focusing on both research and teaching, the holder will contribute to the education and professional development of future healthcare leaders while driving innovation and improvements in patient care.The Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing recognizes the increasing demand for specialized expertise in palliative care and nursing ethics research. This position represents a strategic investment in advancing the field, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing the complex healthcare needs of diverse vulnerable populations. Furthermore, it emphasizes the institution´s commitment to promoting excellence in health research, particularly in nursing education, nursing ethics and palliative care research, and practice to improve health outcomes and enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities.The holder of this scientific profile will lead the creation of a permanent and excellent research group. The holder will show the capacity to attract competitive funding and promote multidisciplinary, interprofessional, international and intersectoral research projects aiming at evaluating the clinical, ethical, sociocultural, health services and policy impact of novel interventions for people with cancer and non-cancer conditions across healthcare systems. The holder will ensure excellence, visibility, and better integration of health research and show research leadership on the following topics: (i) Improved supportive, palliative, survivorship, and end-of-life care of cancer patients; (ii) Novel approaches for palliative and end-of-life care for non-cancer patients; and (iii) Ethics in science with and for society.
