We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Researcher to contribute to research activities within the Food and Nutrition Line of the Research Centre (CBQF), specifically within the Food Microbiology group. This group focuses on food safety and quality, including the adaptation, survival, and virulence of microorganisms to stresses imposed by the food supply chain, microbial ecology studies, biological control strategies, and the impact of microbial metabolites. Our research has dedicated substantial attention to investigating protective cultures of lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriocins as natural preservatives across various food matrices. However, significant knowledge gaps persist regarding their potential negative (e.g. toxicity) and beneficial effects (e.g. preventing the growth of pathogens in gut environments) on human health. There remains a lengthy journey ahead and a vast potential yet to be explored in this domain since insufficient data on the safety and toxicity of bacteriocins still represents a barrier against the more widespread use of bacteriocins by the food (and medical) industry.As a member of this team, the Assistant Researcher will be involved in developing and executing innovative research projects aimed at addressing these critical gaps in our understanding of the effects of bacteriocins on human health.  Overall, the researcher´s expertise not only enhances CBQF´s research capabilities but also reinforces its commitment to addressing pressing global challenges related to food safety, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainability. The research and use of antimicrobial-based solutions is highly relevant across multiple sectors, including health, food and nutrition, and environmental sustainability. This interdisciplinary field intersects with key policy objectives such as the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork strategy. As outlined in the Food 2030 Goals and in line with the mission of the CBQF, "the world of the microbiome" is one of the 10 pathways for action to achieve nutrition for sustainable and healthy diets, to promote food systems that support a healthy planet, and to promote circularity and resource efficiency.The Assistant Researcher will also take a lead role in applying for competitive grants or research funding, develop links with relevant stakeholders for collaborative research, write scientific papers/presentations for scientific and professional meetings, and assist in communicating research findings. Additionally, the Assistant Researcher will be involved in training and supervising young researchers.Profile:Doctoral degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Food Science, or related areas.Minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience in the field of microbiology or related areas.Expert knowledge in lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriocins.Experience in cell culture techniquesSupervision of young researchers.Participation in national and international research projects.Relevant track record of scientific publications (H-index preferably not lower than 20).Participation in science communication activities for different target groups.Recognition of scientific merit by international entities.
