Research in controlled nuclear fusion focuses on the work programme established by the Euratom Fusion roadmap, which includes activities associated with the system development, operation and scientific exploitation of large and medium-sized tokamaks and stellarators, as well as the design and construction of the next generation of fusion devices. Our team has internationally recognized expertise in key areas of the EU Fusion Programme: engineering and systems integration (namely, microwave diagnostics, control and data acquisition, and remote handling), theory and modelling, tokamak operation, and material characterization. The fusion programme has made a transition from pure research to design, construction and operation of future facilities like ITER and DEMO. This transition requires IPFN/DECN/IST to strengthen its competencies in the characterization of nuclear fusion plasmas using microwave reflectometry diagnostics. Furthermore, these competencies are enabling a growing participation in some privately funded initiatives for the development of innovative nuclear fusion solutions. The new member to recruit will integrate IPFN-LA to develop a research program fully in line with the mission of the LA.Prospective candidates must, by the date of the upcoming opening, have earned a doctoral degree in Engineering, Physics, or related areas. Candidates must have an excellent record of publications in nuclear fusion plasma physics, plasma diagnostics and/or fusion engineering, capacity to raise project funding and a clear potential to promote and lead research activities in the area of microwave diagnostics for  nuclear fusion. Strong communication skills and proficiency of the English language are required.The candidates will be expected to:1) Develop a strong and independent research career with national and international recognition;2) Develop a research program, which is capable of attracting competitive funding at the national and international level;3) Supervise undergraduate, MSc and PhD students;4) Contribute to undergraduate and graduate (MSc and PhD) teaching programs;5) Carry out other service activities as a faculty member, by interacting collegially and maintaining the highest standard of integrity and ethics.This field is a key research line of DECN in the scientific area of Nuclear Technologies and Radiological Protection. DECN needs urgent rejuvenation in this scientific area, to relaunch its activities for the decades. The hiring of new talented researchers in this field will be essential to maintain the scientific leadership of IST in the field of Nuclear Sciences and Technologies and enhance the competencies in nuclear fusion. The researcher will be integrated into one of the research groups of the Thematic Line of Controlled Nuclear Fusion of IPFN with many years of experience in the participation in the European Fusion Programme. The researcher is expected to develop work in the areas of relevance for the participation of IPFN in the European Fusion Programme and build up an independent research line.This position is open to comply with the legal obligations of opening a call for research functions compatible with existing DL57/16 contracts.
