The prospective employee will be an assistant researcher. This researcher will be an integral part of INESC-ID dynamic research teams, contributing to innovative projects at the forefront of computer science and electrical and computer engineering. The recruited researcher will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in academic research, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and technology.Such a person will play a multifaceted and pivotal role in the research landscape, contributing significantly to the realms of post-graduate education and knowledge creation. As educators, researchers engage in the transfer of knowledge to the next generation, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of their respective fields. They design and deliver lectures, mentor students, and assess their academic progress, all while inspiring a passion for learning.Simultaneously, researchers are avid to push the boundaries of knowledge in their chosen disciplines. Through rigorous investigation, experimentation, and analysis, they seek to uncover new insights and challenge existing paradigms. Research findings are often disseminated through publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and presentations, and collaborations with other experts in the field. The dual role of educator and researcher enables them to bring the latest advancements and discoveries directly into the supervision of post-graduate students.Beyond the research endeavors, researchers may also engage in community outreach, professional service, and interdisciplinary collaborations, further enriching the academic ecosystem. Their influence extends beyond the university campus, shaping the future of their disciplines and contributing to the advancement of society as a whole. Overall, the job of a researcher is a dynamic and intellectually fulfilling endeavor that combines teaching, research, and service to make enduring contributions to academia and the broader world. In summary, the major tasks to be assigned to the prospective employee are:To supervise graduate and/or PhD students; To perform top-level scientific research in the scientific area of the position; To attract funding by applying to research projects; To engage in communication and outreach activities. The hired PhD researcher in the field of High Performance Computing should have competencies in advanced chip design and exploitation, given the importance in today´s technological landscape, especially considering current initiatives such as the European Commission´s CHIPS Act, the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and the RISC-V Open Standard Instruction Set Architecture. As the world increasingly relies on semiconductor technology for a wide range of applications, including artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and data centres, it is of strategic importance to be able to design cutting-edge architectures and systems, as well as all the software layers and tools to efficiently explore them. Fostering innovation in this domain is not only crucial for Europe´s technological sovereignty but also for economic competitiveness and security. By positioning itself as a major player in chip design and exploitation, Europe can reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers and bolster its leadership in key industries and technologies, allowing it to attain digital autonomy, promote innovation-driven growth, and address societal challenges through technology. As a national leader in the research and development of computer systems technologies, INESC-ID wants to establish itself as a fundamental player in this area and drive Portuguese innovation. Therefore, it is hiring a PhD researcher with expertise in areas such as digital chip and systems design, FPGA prototyping, memory systems, accelerators, high-performance computing, compilers, performance monitoring tools, and computer architecture security. Such a researcher should bring not only technical prowess but also a strategic mindset essential for positioning INESC-ID as a major player in Europe´s semiconductor industry. The hired researcher should help drive research efforts aimed at developing indigenous chip technologies tailored to European needs, fostering collaborations with industry partners and academia, and shaping policies conducive to innovation and competitiveness. Additionally, possible expertise in computer architecture security will contribute towards resilience against emerging threats, safeguarding critical infrastructures and data. Essentially, the PhD researcher should bring not only advanced knowledge but also a deep understanding of the intricacies involved in designing cutting-edge architectures and systems, exploiting architectures and systems for performance, power and energy consumption, and fulfilling real-time and power constraints.
