The prospective employee in the position of Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at FMUP, in collaboration with RISE-Health, is expected to have a crucial role aimed at advancing research, education, and clinical practice in the field of Ophthalmology/Retinal Vascular Diseases and its relationship with the Cardiovascular System. The prospective employee will be entrusted with a diverse range of tasks in the following areas:1. Research:The prospective employee is expected to conduct clinically relevant research in the field of Ophthalmology, namely retinal diseases related to the cardiovascular system and angiogenesis. A particular focus will be on diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and age-related macular degeneration. This position is expected to have a translational approach to research, with the prospective employee being able to integrate knowledge from imaging, clinical ophthalmology and artificial intelligence. The candidate must have experience in both basic and clinical research and have a track record of publication in top-tier journals in the field of Ophthalmology. The candidate is expected to be integrated into a multidisciplinary team and must have experience working with researchers and experts from other fields and disciplines.2. Education:The prospective employee will have a pivotal role in the education of Ophthalmology. The candidate is expected to teach lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on topics related to Ophthalmology for undergraduate and postgraduate students at FMUP. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to supervise younger researchers and students with master’s degrees and PhD degrees.3. Clinical Practice:The prospective employee is expected to maintain a strong connection between research and patient care. The clinical care of patients and the contact with other physicians is expected to enrich the understanding of their research´s practical applications and contribute to improving patient outcomes. The clinical care in ophthalmology should be medical and surgical, with a special interest in retinal vascular retinal diseases and angiogenesis. This clinical practice is also essential to the education of Ophthalmology from primary to tertiary centres. The clinical profile is broadened by a humanistic view of Medicine with a special concern on ethical issues intersecting research and clinical practice.??????? Scientific Profile:The candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications and attributes:A PhD degree with a thesis in the field of Ophthalmology.Demonstrated expertise in clinical medicine with a longstanding practice in Ophthalmology and Retinal diseases, outpatient clinics, surgery and emergency medicine.Demonstrated expertise in clinical medicine research as evidenced by a strong publication record in reputable scientific journals and contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field.Experience in conducting independent research, including designing and implementing experiments, data analysis, and interpretation.Experience in the evaluation of research projects in what concerns scientific and bioethical validity.Effective communication skills and the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including students, colleagues, and external stakeholders, as demonstrated in congresses, seminars and classes.A collaborative mindset and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations to address complex scientific questions and translate findings into clinical practice.Previous interdisciplinary publications with other areas of cardiovascular medicine demonstrate the ability to participate in such projects.The rationale for hiring an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology under the FCT-Tenure Call stems from several factors:Potentiating cardiovascular research with the aid of Ophthalmology: The candidate´s areas of expertise are rapidly evolving with significant implications for clinical care. Imaging by optical coherence tomography angiography provides access to non-invasive visualization of retinal capillaries. By combining the knowledge of the research ophthalmologist with cardiovascular researchers, there is potential for new and insightful research in cardiovascular medicine.Enhancing education and training: the hiring of an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology will enrich the educational experience of pre and post-graduate students at FMUP. Students will receive adequate training in a field where the pace of innovation is very fast and imaging, and artificial intelligence are in the vanguard.Strengthening clinical integration and quality of research. The involvement of ophthalmologists with experience in retinal vascular imaging is essential for translating scientific discoveries in cardiovascular medicine into tangible benefits for patients.
