We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our institution as an Assistant Professor in Physiology, Simulation, and Training in Surgery. The ideal candidate will have a medical degree, a strong background in theoretical and experimental physiology, and a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology. Special attention will be given to candidates with surgical expertise. The candidate should possess a prolific academic profile, with significant experience in teaching and tutoring students. Advanced clinical and technical training and expertise in clinical specialties dedicated to surgery and interventions (including but not limited to general surgery, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, cardiology, interventional radiology, anesthesiology, etc.) are required. The candidate should have a focus and passion for innovation and medical education aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical practice. He/she should be oriented toward surgical techniques, pharmaco-physiological mechanisms, and/or device development, on a mission to enhance patient safety and healthcare outcomes with ever-advancing simulation. Preference will be given to profiles demonstrating an understanding of the regulatory processes required for the clinical application of new therapeutic interventions and a mindset toward business development. To qualify for this role, the candidate should hold a doctoral degree in Physiology or a related field, experience in teaching and training pre- and post-graduate students, and a robust investigational background evidenced by noteworthy publications in the field. Expertise in leadership and team management is also essential, including excellent communication skills, which will be crucial for engaging students and colleagues and creating an outstanding scientific network. The selected candidate will spearhead developing and implementing cutting-edge, digitally enhanced surgical and cardiovascular medicine education. The main purpose is to provide validated customized medical simulation training with high-fidelity technologies for effective improvement of technical skills. This will include leading the creation of immersive and realistic simulation experiences for students and healthcare professionals. These innovative teaching methods will replicate clinical and surgical situations, allowing learners to develop practical skills and clinical decision-making in real time. This initiative aims to increase confidence, ensure safety, and minimize the risk of errors or complications in clinical settings. The candidate will be instrumental in integrating digital teaching tools with traditional face-to-face teaching methods. This hybrid approach will reinforce theoretical and practical content, promote student and faculty interaction, foster teamwork, and enable continuous assessment of student progress and performance.Expected responsibilities will include: 1) pre and post-graduate teaching in physiology and experimental surgery to both medical students and post-graduate courses (MSc and PhD); 2) develop an innovative course curriculum using contemporary methodologies and taking advantage of state-of-the-art experimental surgery facilities to enhance the student learning experience; 3) establish an innovative but feasible research line on applied physiology and experimental surgery promoting our institution in the field; 4) create specific lines for simulation training in several fields including all different major aspects such as open surgery, endovascular surgery, laparoscopic techniques, robotic surgery; 4) partner with Portuguese Medical Simulation Society to elaborate formal simulation programs for physicians, either residents or consultants, to continuously develop their skills; 5) engage with medical societies to acknowledge potential specific deficits on clinical experience and foster specific training sessions in areas establish by the candidates. The rationale for this position aligns with the need to modernize and enhance the quality of cardiovascular and surgery education. By leveraging digital technologies, innovative teaching methodologies, and appropriate logistics and technology, the candidate will contribute significantly to the field. This approach not only enriches the learning experience but also addresses the diverse needs and preferences of pre-graduate students but also post-graduate physicians (residents), thereby fostering a more engaging and effective educational environment. The candidate´s role will be pivotal in positioning our institution at the forefront of medical education and research, attracting top talent, and meeting the evolving demands of healthcare education.
