Job descriptionThe prospective employee in the position of Full Professor in Pathophysiology and Intensive Care Medicine at FMUP, in collaboration with RISE, is expected to have a crucial role aimed at advancing research, education, and clinical practice in the field of physiology, pathophysiology, intensive care medicine, and extracorporeal organ support. The prospective employee will be entrusted with a diverse range of tasks in the following areas:1. Research :The prospective employee is expected to conduct clinically relevant research in the field of Pathophysiology and Intensive Care Medicine, with a particular focus on the pathophysiology of critical illness. This position is expected to have a translational approach to research, integrating knowledge from basic and clinical sciences. The candidate must have experience in both basic and clinical research and have a track record of publication in top-tier journals in the fields of Pathophysiology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Extracorporeal Organ Support. The candidate is expected to be integrated into a multidisciplinary team and must have experience working with researchers and experts from other fields and disciplines.2. Education :The prospective employee will have a pivotal role in the education of Physiology and Pathophysiology content in the field of basic sciences and will also have an important role in the education at a clinical level in the field of Intensive Care Medicine and Extracorporeal Organ Support. The candidate is expected to teach lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on these fields for undergraduate and postgraduate students at FMUP. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to supervise younger researchers and students with master’s degrees and PhD degrees.3. Clinical Practice :The prospective employee is expected to maintain a strong connection between research and patient care. The clinical care of patients and the contact with other physicians are expected to enrich the understanding of their research´s practical applications and contribute to improving patient outcomes. This clinical practice is also essential to the education of Intensive Care Medicine and Extracorporeal Organ Support at the clinical level. Scientific Profile :The candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications and attributes:A PhD degree with a thesis in the fields of Physiology and Pathophysiology.An academic title of Aggregate in the fields of Intensive Care Medicine and Extracorporeal Organ Support.Demonstrated expertise in Intensive Care Medicine and Extracorporeal Organ Support, as evidenced by a strong publication record in reputable scientific journals and contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field.Experience in teaching Physiology and Pathophysiology Curricular Units to undergraduate medical students.Experience in teaching Intensive Care Medicine and Extracorporeal Organ Support to undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students.Experience in conducting independent research, including designing and implementing experiments, data analysis, and interpretation.Effective communication skills and the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.A collaborative mindset and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations to address complex scientific questions and translate findings into clinical practice. Rationale :The rationale for hiring a Full Professor in Pathophysiology and Intensive Care Medicine under the FCT-Tenure Call stems from several factors. First, addressing research gaps in the pathophysiology of critical illnesses. Intensive Care Medicine represents a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for public health, as it was shown by the COVID-19 pandemic. By recruiting a dedicated faculty member, FMUP and RISE aim to expand research efforts in these areas, addressing key knowledge gaps and driving innovation in diagnostics, therapeutics, and organ support. Second, enhancing education and training: The hiring presence of a Full Professor in Pathophysiology and Intensive Care Medicine will enrich the educational experience of students at FMUP, ensuring adequate formation in a field where the pace of innovation is very fast, as exemplified by the profound changes in the comprehension of the pathophysiology of ARDS and septic shock, as well as in the clinical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Finally, strengthen clinical integration and improve the quality of research. The involvement of clinicians in basic and clinical research is essential for translating scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for patients. This Full Professor position for FMUP, and for RISE, is an opportunity to foster closer ties between research activities and real-world patient care, ultimately improving health outcomes.
