1. TASKS TO BE ASSIGNED TO THE PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEEThe development of instrumentation for specific uses relies on the selection of products and components produced elsewhere that, together, allow the production of instruments adapted for their end use. Additive manufacturing combined with subtractive manufacturing brings new possibilities to produce parts and components allowing to respond faster and cheaper to the demand of LNEC activities. Additive manufacturing will be the general domain of research proposed to this job.From the perspective of additive manufacturing, multi-material 3D printing enables the simultaneous use of multiple materials. This capability allows for the creation of complex and multi-functional objects. The hybrid additive manufacturing systems combine multiple fabrication techniques to overcome the limitations of individual methods and achieve greater flexibility and precision. Multi-material 3D printing can be integrated into hybrid systems to enable inserts, or reinforcements on conventionally manufactured parts, enhancing their performance and functionality. The candidate is expected to explore the following specific topics:Simultaneous Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing (Multi-Process Integration): Hybrid additive manufacturing systems integrate both additive (3D printing) and subtractive (machining) processes, allowing the production of complex parts with high precision and surface finish. By combining these processes, we can reduce production lead times, minimize material waste, and optimize part quality.Multi-Material Printing and Assembly: Hybrid additive manufacturing systems facilitate the use of multiple materials, including polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites, to create complex, multi-functional parts and assemblies. By combining different materials with complementary properties, we can achieve customized material compositions, mechanical properties, and functionalities in a single printed object, expanding the range of applications and design possibilities.On-Demand and Distributed Manufacturing: Although this topic is foreseen for a large group of customers, even for a small group (as LNEC laboratories) the methods used for on-demand and distributed manufacturing models are relevant because they enable rapid prototyping, customization, and small-batch production of parts and components.2. SCIENTIFIC PROFILE REQUIREDThe employee should possess the expertise to conduct applied research in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The following competencies will be highly esteemed and sought after:Familiarity with the principles of 3D printing technologies, materials, and post-processing techniques.Knowledge of materials used in additive manufacturing, including polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites.Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address challenges in AM processes and materials.Familiarity with programming languages and scripting for automation and optimization of AM processes.Ability to use simulation and modelling tools for predicting the behaviour of AM parts.Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and integrate insights from various fields.The ability to think creatively and explore innovative solutions using additive manufacturing.3. RATIONALE TO HIRE FOR THE SCIENTIFIC AREAThe Electrotechnical and Mechanical Systems Unit (NSEM) of Scientific Instrumentation Centre (CIC) carries out R&DI in the field of Scientific Instrumentation. It provides the support for LNEC laboratories. Today LNEC’s laboratory infrastructure faces the need for modernization, pursuing the aim of developing a system based on a digital transition. Therefore, the laboratory infrastructure and legacy systems are undertaking an intense transformation that requires a new vision to measurement and instrumentation.Carrying out tests on physical models, at full scale and reduced scale, has been a constant presence since the creation of LNEC. Alongside these, the design and conception of prototype systems – test systems for the various areas of Civil Engineering – have also marked the activity of LNEC´s almost 80 years of existence.Having in mind these two purposes, LNEC realized early on the importance of having a precision mechanics workshop with the capacity to produce unique parts, designed to satisfy the high requirements of rigor and accuracy.Unfortunately, given the aging of the machines and the lack of specialized labour, it is not possible to keep the mechanics workshop, making it impossible to continue this activity. As a result, it arises to find an alternative way that allows parts with special requirements to be produced at low cost and involving little labour and recyclable materials.
