Job DescriptionThe successful candidate will lead and contribute to innovative research and development projects in heterogeneous computer systems. Responsibilities will include designing, implementing, and evaluating state-of-the-art computer systems with particular emphasis on efficient heterogeneous systems with processors and specialized accelerators for domain-specific and energy-efficient computing, especially in the context of integrated circuits and platforms for embedded systems. Responsibilities also include improving the existing lab research facilities by identifying relevant hardware and software tools. The role will involve dynamic and effective collaboration with academic and industrial partners at national and international levels. In addition, the successful candidate will also contribute to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in computer architecture, contributing to the education of the next generation of computer systems experts. Scientific ProfileThe successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Computer and Digital Systems) or a closely related field focusing on domain-specific computers and reconfigurable systems. A publication record in leading journals and conferences in the field is also required. The successful candidate should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: digital systems, general and/or domain-specific computer architectures, reconfigurable computing, and heterogeneous computer architectures for embedded systems. Experience with grant writing, research and development projects, and project management is highly desirable. Experience in microelectronics design is also valued. RationaleHeterogeneous computer systems have become an essential area of research and development in electrical engineering and offer significant opportunities for innovation and progress. With the rapid growth of technology, the integration of various computing elements, such as CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and AI accelerators, into a single system is becoming more common. This trend requires specialized expertise to overcome the unique challenges and capitalize on the opportunities associated with heterogeneous computer architectures. This role is aligned with the objectives of the European Chips Act, which aims to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and resilience in semiconductor technologies. Four aspects are crucial in this context: 1. Industry Demand: Heterogeneous computer systems are widely used in various industries, including telecommunications, automotive, healthcare, and finance, among others. Industry demand for professionals skilled in designing, optimizing, and managing heterogeneous computer systems is growing rapidly. 2. Driving innovation: Heterogeneous computer systems offer unique opportunities to accelerate computational tasks, improve energy efficiency, and enable new applications such as real-time analytics, deep learning, and autonomous systems. The research conducted by the successful candidate can drive innovation through the development of novel algorithms, architectures, and programming models tailored to exploit the full potential of heterogeneous computer platforms. This innovation can lead to breakthroughs in performance, energy efficiency, and scalability and advance the state of the art in computer technology. 3. Competitiveness: The successful candidate will strengthen our competitiveness in attracting external funding from government agencies, industry partners, and other organizations. Their research initiatives may lead to significant grants and contracts to support innovative research projects, infrastructure development, and student scholarships. This role will enhance our reputation and visibility and attract high-caliber students seeking academic and research excellence opportunities. 4. Educational Excellence: Integrating heterogeneous computing concepts and techniques into the curriculum will enhance students´ education and provide them with valuable skills and knowledge relevant to modern computer systems.
