NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities seeks to expand its academic staff by appointing a Principal Researcher in studies of Science, Health, Power and Repression, with a particular focus on a multi and interdisciplinary approach. The selected candidate will develop their research agenda as an active member of Research Unit (RU) CHAM - Center for the HUmanities and will contribute to the development of NOVA FCSH strategic lines, as detailed below. This position presupposes the development of original research in an interdisciplinary area, involving the History of Medicine, medical narratives and narratives about the body and mind, and the relationship between medical knowledge and society, its conflicts, the clash of powers, both from the point of view of the development of knowledge about the body and health and from the point of view of the conception of the boundaries between what is lawful and what is forbidden. The importance of this research is apparent in the implications that historical and philosophical knowledge in the field of health has for political and ethical choices nowadays. In this respect, it is important to study the institutions and circumstances in which this knowledge is produced or proscribed. This is a topic of research being developed at CHAM in a transversal approach, relating several of its research groups and ongoing projects. To futher strengthen and develop it, preference will be given to candidates who propose the development of innovative methodologies in these fields of study and also to applications that favour the international dimension of the research. This position dialogs with both strategic lines of the NOVA FCSH that focus on ´Arts and Humanities´ and ´Society and Politics´. So, at the institutional level, and considering this position’s contribution for NOVA FCSH strategic areas, this position is also an important piece of NOVA’s Hiring Plan, as this plan represents a comprehensive strategy targeting strategic areas of NOVA. It will provide a crucial contribution to the overall research agenda of the University. In what concerns NOVA FCSH specifically, this position will be crucial to strengthen the existing critical mass developing research under strategic areas, while connecting it to innovative teaching practices. Requirements for this position are: PhD degree in History or Literary Studies or Philosophy; Specific expertise on Health issues and the History of sciences; Recognized experience in the design and implementation of research projects, including projects with competitive and external funding; Relevant experience in team coordination, in the context of research projects and/or managerial responsibilities; Outstanding research qualities demonstrated through an established track record of relevant publications, including peer-reviewed, international journals, books and other relevant outlets; Proven experience in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary teams, either as project leader and/or team member; Active member of relevant networks (academic and non-academic) in the research topics covered; Strong focus on societal engagement and knowledge exchange with relevant stakeholders and society in general. In close articulation with other positions of CHAM proposed by NOVA FCSH under this application, and considered together, they are not only complementary as they also embody the interdisciplinary principle that informed the identification and definition of NOVA FCSH profiles under strategic areas and are aligned with the institution strategic outlook for 2025-2030.
