Profile ‘Assistant Researcher in Musicology- Portuguese Musical Heritage’ NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities seeks to expand its academic staff by appointing an Assistant Researcher in Musicology, with particular expertise in the area of Portuguese Musical Heritage. The selected candidate will develop their research agenda as an active member of Research Unit CESEM and will contribute to the development of NOVA FCSH strategic line on “Memory and Heritage”. Key responsibilities 1.    Design and conduct independent research on topics related with Portuguese Musical Heritage between the 18th and 19th centuries. 2.    Generate and disseminate high-quality research findings, including (but not exclusively) international, peer-reviewed journals. 3.    Contribute to a supportive and productive research community, namely by supporting the design and implementation of CESEM research strategy, as well as NOVA FCSH strategic area of “Memory and Heritage” and the Associated Laboratory IN2PAST. 4.    Design and submit applications for competitive research funding. 5.    Actively develop efforts to establish meaningful collaborative work with academic and non-academic institutions, setting the ground for future partnerships and social engagement. 6.    Develop and teach courses, including in their field of expertise, thus actively contributing to the renewal and ongoing improvement of curricula and educational practices at all levels. 7.    Supervise post-graduate students, by providing mentoring and advice. Scientific Profile 1.    PhD degree in Historical Musicology or in History, with complementary music diplomas. 2.    Specific expertise in the areas of Music History and Portuguese Musical Heritage, particularly focusing on the 18th and/or 19th centuries.   Skills in the areas of musical iconography or performance and performance studies. 3.    Experience in the design and implementation of research projects, including projects with competitive and external funding. 4.    Experience in team coordination, in the context of research projects and/or managerial responsibilities. 5.    Outstanding research qualities demonstrated through an established track record of relevant publications, including peer-reviewed, international journals, books and other relevant outlets. 6.    Active member of relevant international networks (academic and non-academic) in the research topics covered. 7.    Strong focus on societal engagement and knowledge exchange with relevant stakeholders and society in general. 8.    Desirable experience in teaching and/or supervision, at Master and eventually PhD level, and evidence of commitment to innovative pedagogical approaches, from a research-led teaching approach. Rationale The recruitment of an Assistant Researcher in Musicology with solid experience in Portuguese musical heritage is scientifically relevant both for the CESEM Research Unit and for NOVA FCSH, as well as for the Associated Laboratory In2Past. Knowledge about Portuguese musical heritage has notably advanced over the past decades, resulting in a substantial body of research which warrants further pursuit, as many sources, repertoires and performance contexts remain under-or completely unexplored. As the 18th and 19th centuries are particularly rich periods in what concerns manuscript and printed materials in the archives, and the potential outputs can dialogue with and feed not only scholarly thought but classical music performance as well, attaining a larger audience, it is justified to open a position for a permanent researcher at CESEM in association with IN2PAST. Within historical musicology, this heritage could be approached from different angles, including critical editing, music iconography and/or performance studies. Recruiting an Assistant Researcher in this area would (1) strengthen the research developed within the CESEM study groups of "Early Music" and "Music in the Modern Period" (since the 18th century overlaps both), adding complementary skills and enhancing research results; (2) feed and develop the activity of CESEM´s Music Paleography and Editing Lab (LAPEM), which also serves both groups; (3) support CESEM in strengthening international recognition in its field and further establishing it as a reference both nationally and internationally; and (4) contribute to teaching and guidance at the postgraduate level, training a new generation of young researchers at CESEM. This position is also crucial for continuing to develop the ´Memory and Heritage´ strategic line of NOVA FCSH, one of the five strategic areas that will support the teaching and research mission of NOVA FCSH until 2030, as well as contributing to the presence of music within the scope of the associated laboratory IN2PAST in an area where, due to the lack of historical awareness, technical means and human resources, there is much to define and implement in terms of public policies.
