Profile ‘Chair CESEM-IN2PAST: Musical Heritage - Preservation and dissemination’ NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities seeks to expand its academic staff by appointing an Assistant Researcher in Musical  Heritage - Preservation and dissemination. The selected candidate will develop their research agenda as an active member of Research Unit CESEM and Associated Laboratory IN2PAST. Key responsibilities 1. Design and conduct independent research on topics related with Musical  Heritage - Preservation and dissemination between the 11th and 17th centuries. 2. Generate and disseminate high-quality research findings, including (but not exclusively) in international, peer-reviewed journals. 3. Contribute to a supportive and productive research community, namely by supporting the design and implementation of CESEM research strategy, as well as the Associated Laboratory IN2PAST. 4. Design and submit applications for competitive research funding. 5. Actively develop efforts to establish meaningful collaborative work with academic and non-academic institutions, setting the ground for future partnerships and social engagement. 6. Develop and teach courses, including in their field of expertise, thus actively contributing to the renewal and ongoing improvement of curricula and educational practices at all levels. 7. Supervise post-graduate students, by providing mentoring and advice. Scientific Profile 1. PhD degree in Historical Musicology. 2. Specific expertise in the areas of Musical  Heritage, particularly focusing on Gregorian chant  (11th to the 17th centuries).   Skills in the areas Preservation and Dissemination and/or musical performance. 3. Experience in the design and implementation of research projects, including projects with competitive and external funding. 4. Experience in team coordination, in the context of research projects and/or managerial responsibilities. 5. Outstanding research qualities demonstrated through an established track record of relevant publications, including peer-reviewed, international journals, books and other relevant outlets. 6. Active member of relevant international networks (academic and non-academic) in the research topics covered. 7. Strong focus on societal engagement and knowledge exchange with relevant stakeholders and society in general. 8. Ability to participate in the definition of public policies, to be able to communicate them, engage and collaborate with citizens and stakeholders. 9. Desirable experience in teaching and/or supervision, at Master and eventually PhD level, and evidence of commitment to innovative pedagogical approaches. Rationale CESEM Research Unit is already internationally recognised for its expertise in Early Music. The recruitment of an Assistant Researcher in Musicology with solid experience in Musical  Heritage - Preservation and dissemination is scientifically relevant both for the CESEM and for the Associated Laboratory In2Past. The historical period defined for the scope of this chair (11th to17th centuries) is particularly rich in sources of sacred and liturgical music, especially Gregorian chant, ranging from simple fragments to vast collections of pieces. These sources are distributed across many libraries and museums in the country and need not only to be studied but also reconstructed and preserved. Given the often transnational nature of the repertoires they contained, it is intended that the candidate for this position be familiar not only with Portuguese sources but also with those from other countries, notably French sources. These repertoires should also be revisited and disseminated through musical performance. Recruiting an Assistant Researcher in this area would (1) strengthen the research developed within the CESEM study group of "Early Music", adding complementary skills and enhancing research results; (2) enable a dialogue between the academy, the Associate Laboratory IN2PAST and the institutions that hold these sources, contributing for the conservation, valorization, and revitalization of this legacy; 3) feed and develop the activity of CESEM´s Music Paleography and Editing Lab (LAPEM); (4) support CESEM in strengthening international recognition in its field and further establishing it as a reference both nationally and internationally; 5) contribute to teaching and guidance at the postgraduate level, training a new generation of young researchers at CESEM. This position is also crucial for continuing to develop the ´Memory and Heritage´ strategic line of NOVA FCSH, one of the five strategic areas that will support the teaching and research mission of NOVA FCSH until 2030.
