1) Job description: Assistant Researcher specialized in Metalloprotein Biophysics. The position is for a highly motivated researcher with strong background in protein biophysics, to undertake research in the fields of electrochemical biosensor development and protein structural/functional characterization integrating advanced vibrational spectroscopy and spectro-electrochemistry. The candidate is expected to develop innovative research aiming at exploring the potential of metalloproteins for medical, environmental and biotechnological applications. Tasks and responsibilities: 1.1) Research activities: - Conduct research on redox metalloproteins, with special emphasis on heme and Fe-S cluster containing ones, which catalyze reactions relevant for biotechnological applications, such as peroxidases, endonucleases and nitrite reductases. - Lead studies on design of electrochemical platforms for the exploration of metalloproteins in biotechnology, including bioremediation of environmental pollutants, and construction of biosensors for detection of biomarkers in medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. 1.2) Project Management and collaborations: Lead and coordinate research initiatives, from acquiring funding to project planning, execution, and dissemination. Establish collaboration networks, both national and international, promoting the creation of interdisciplinary teams and international consortia. 1.3) Publication and Dissemination: Contribute to the scientific community through original results reported in peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, conference organization and participation in scientific committees. Actively participate in science outreach activities to promote scientific knowledge and engagement with the broader community. 1.4) Supervision, Training and Teaching: Supervision and mentoring of postdoctoral researchers, PhD and Master students, fostering a productive and inclusive lab environment. Teaching in postgraduate courses at ITQB NOVA. Management of common IR equipment at the host institution, providing technical training and scientific advisory to new users. 2) Scientific Profile Required: 2.1) PhD in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or related fields; 2.2) Research experience in the field of metalloprotein spectroscopy, with focus on vibrational spectroscopy, electrochemistry, electrode surface modification, spectro-electrochemistry, metalloprotein purification and enzyme kinetics; 2.3) Proven track record of scientific publications in the above mentioned areas, including, in addition, development of electrochemical biosensors based on redox proteins; 2.4) Experience in mentoring and supervising master’s and doctoral students and at post-doc fellows; 2.5) Demonstrated ability to secure research funding and project management; 2.6) Experience as member of international consortia; 2.7) Proficiency in written and spoken English, with experience in writing research proposals and scientific publications; 2.8) Excellent communication and organizational skills. 3) Rational for hiring: Hiring an Assistant Researcher specializing in Metalloprotein Biophysics with a background in vibrational spectroscopy and enzyme biosensor development offers a number of advantages to the host institution, which will drive scientific advancement of various domains. This hiring will reinforce the biophysical expertise of ITQB, which is essential for advancing the knowledge of numerous biological processes, and is of interest for many research groups at ITQB, as well as for the hired person. The integration of in-depth understanding of mechanistic properties of metalloproteins with their application in biosensor technology will enable the development of innovative biotechnology tools. Metalloprotein-based biosensors can provide robust and diverse platforms for medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety, which aligns well with ITQB’s mission to contribute to global health security and environmental protection. The selected candidate’s skills should allow for the exploration of new bioanalytical applications, such as the implementation of spectroscopic characterization of immobilized metalloproteins in biosensor construction. The candidate should bring to the host institution an interdisciplinary approach that fosters collaborations, ability to secure funding and lead projects, which will ensure the sustainability and growth of ITQB´s research profile and fund raising initiatives. Furthermore, the candidate’s commitment to teaching and supervision should align with the institution’s focus on graduate teaching and scientific development.
