Job descriptionWe are seeking a highly qualified and motivated Assistant Researcher with a robust background in biochemistry, microbiology, metabolite profiling analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and mammalian cell culture technologies. The candidate should demonstrate a specialized focus on investigating bacterial metabolic responses at the host-pathogen interface. This individual will assume a pivotal role in spearheading innovative research initiatives to unravel the metabolic strategies used by multidrug resistant pathogens to withstand host mammalian stresses and look into possible targeted treatments.Key responsibilities: 1) Conceptualize, design and implement cutting-edge research that addresses key questions encompassing the metabolic adaptations of pathogens to host cell stresses, in the context of colonization and infection, with an emphasis on pathogens with high infection potential, such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus spp.; 2) Develop new co-culture models of human and bacterial cells, either in planktonic or biofilm states, as well as novel NMR approaches, to explore bacterial metabolic behaviours; 3) Develop and troubleshoot various biochemical, biophysical and cell-based assays to assess the metabolic mechanisms of pathogen resistance; 4) Develop assays for testing compounds toxicity in bacterial and animal cells and to elucidate the mode of action of these compounds; 5) Lead and manage research projects, encompassing securing funding from national and international project calls, project planning, execution, and dissemination of findings; 6) Mentoring and supervision of PhD and Master´s students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, ensuring a welcoming and productive lab; 7) Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams both within and beyond the Institution; 8) Share research findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations; 9) Teach at the postgraduate level (master´s and PhD); 10) Actively engage in science education and outreach. Scientific profile required1) PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, with a strong focus on microbial physiology and metabolism; 2) Expertise in conceptualizing, implementing, executing, and leading research projects focused on unravelling molecular mechanisms and metabolic strategies of multidrug-resistant pathogens, including Streptococcus and Staphylococcus spp., to counteract host stresses; 3) Proven publications in the area of microbial physiology and metabolism of pathogenic bacteria, encompassing both planktonic and biofilm forms; 4) Proven proficiency in various techniques and methodologies: e.g. NMR, including in vivo NMR, culturing of animal cells, genetic manipulation of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus spp., gene expression analysis, assessment of antibacterial activity of several antimicrobials; 5) Experience in teaching, mentoring and supervision of students at PhD and Master’s levels; 6) Demonstrated a proven track record of securing external research funding for both fundamental and translational projects, and publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals; 7) Have authored papers as corresponding author; 8) Exhibit strong leadership qualities, effective communication skills, and the ability to collaborate within interdisciplinary teams; 9) Proven experience of delivering communications at national and international conferences; 10) Have international professional experience; 11) Fluency in English and Portuguese (spoken and written). Rationale for hiringHiring an Assistant Researcher with expertise in microbial metabolism at the host-pathogen interface is critical for advancing our comprehension of how microbes adapt during colonization and infection. The study of the interplay between central metabolic networks and complex phenotypes holds pivotal significance in deciphering microbial behaviour and finding new ways to prevent and treat infection diseases, meeting the growing need for healthcare innovations. Moreover, the focused investigation into multidrug-resistant pathogens will bolster our existing research capacity by introducing novel models of host-pathogen interaction and pioneering new methodologies. Bringing in a candidate with this unique expertise promises ground-breaking discoveries, and presents avenues for collaboration with ITQB NOVA’s LS4FUTURE and MOSTMICRO platforms to explore innovative antimicrobial approaches, as well as potential partnerships with healthcare institutions and industry stakeholders. Selecting a candidate who has demonstrated success in obtaining funding and guiding research projects will be crucial to ensure long-term viability and growth of our research efforts. This appointment underscores the University´s steadfast commitment to maintaining its position at the vanguard of scientific exploration and making impactful contributions in this dynamic field.
