Job Description: ITQB NOVA seeks an experienced Principal Researcher with a strong background in Plant Cell Biology and Development, and a long-standing career in the field of Sexual Plant Reproduction. Using state-of-the-art methodologies like fluorescent-activated cell sorting and low-input transcriptomics, this researcher will lead groundbreaking research projects that aim to understand the development, function and evolution of plant male gametes. Key responsibilities include: 1) Secure international and national funding through the development of highly innovative research projects in the area of Plant Sexual Reproduction and Evolution; 2) Lead and manage such projects, in particular in a highly collaborative international context; 3) Actively disseminate research results through high-impact publications and science outreach activities; 4) Provide guidance and supervision to PhD and Master students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, to cultivate a productive and inclusive lab environment; 5) Foster scientific advancement by engaging in conference presentations, conference organizations, and active participation in scientific committees; 6) Coordinate and teach higher-education programs at the host institution, specifically at MSc and PhD levels. Scientific Profile Required: 1) PhD in Biology or related areas; 2) Extensive experience as independent group leader; 3) Demonstrated expertise in plant sexual reproduction and evolution, internationally recognized, with a specific emphasis on transcriptomics analyses, as shown through relevant publications; 4) Proven track record in obtaining competitive research funding on a national and international level 5) Extensive track record on scientific publications in international, peer-reviewed journals, including publications as (co-) corresponding author, recognized with citations; 6) Experience with transcriptomics analysis in bryophytes and angiosperms; 7) Proven leadership, mentoring, and collaboration abilities; 8) Demonstrated expertise in teaching and supervision at higher education levels (MSc and PhD); 9) Fluency in English and Portuguese (spoken and written). Rationale for Hiring: The newly appointed Principal Researcher will join ITQB NOVA’s GREEN-IT Bioresources for Sustainability R&D Unit, which specializes in soil health, plant health, and plant production. Climate change has a profound impact on Plant Sexual Reproduction, in particular through an increased frequency of heat waves and prolonged periods of drought. Gaining a deeper understanding of the molecular processes that govern plant reproduction, specifically the heat-sensitive phases of pollen development and pollen-pistil interaction, is vital for increasing heat resilience and ensuring food and feed security. The candidate´s unique expertise in this field of research will greatly benefit the unit´s emphasis on plant health and production, whether by conducting internationally funded research or collaborating with other groups in the plant sciences department at ITQB NOVA. The candidate´s profound experience in transcriptomics, down to the single cell level, will bring numerous benefits to various research groups at an institutional level. Additionally, the candidate´s extensive experience in teaching and coordinating curricular units will greatly enhance the PhD and MSc programs. The appointment of a candidate with a documented history of effectively obtaining funding and overseeing research projects will safeguard the continuity and advancement of research initiatives at ITQB NOVA.
