Position: Glass science Assistant ResearcherJob Description: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Glass Science Researcher to join our dynamic team at NOVAFCT / VICARTE / Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes. The developed work will be performed in the Art and Science interface, focusing on the synthesis and characterisation of new sustainable glass materials with different optical properties produced in high-temperature furnaces. The developed materials will be used not only for artistic and craft purposes but also with a view to other technological applications. Focusing on glass and ceramics, the researcher will establish methodologies to produce material knowledge in the area of ??art and heritage, reproducing historical recipes and continuously producing new sustainable products. It will also be responsible for the optical spectroscopy equipment, absorption and emission, and thermal analysis equipment in concrete dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry.Responsibilities:Design and execute experiments to synthesise vitreous materials with specific optical and structural properties;Promote the search for sustainable raw materials and low-cost production processes by reusing waste and decreasing energy consumption. To replicate glasses according to historical recipes;Conduct in-depth analysis of glass materials using various characterisation techniques, focused on optical and thermal properties. To supervise MSc and PhD thesis in the field;Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate findings into broader research initiatives;Contribute to the publication of research findings in reputable scientific journals;Stay abreast of the latest developments in Glass Technology and related fields.Scientific Profile: The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field with a strong focus on Glass Science.Proven expertise in designing and synthesising glass materials, including from historical sources.Extensive knowledge of glass raw materials and melting processes, including understanding reactions and further optimisation for different applications.Proficiency in utilising analytical techniques relevant to the field (dilatometry, differential scanning calorimetry, optical sepctroscopy);Supervision experience (MSc and PhD theses);Strong publication records in reputable scientific journals or demonstrating the ability to contribute novel insights to the field.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.Rationale: The recruitment for this position aligns with the strategic goals of NOVA FCT / VICARTE / Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes to advance research excellence in Cultural Heritage (Thematic Line #5 of the Associative Laboratory LAQV), leading to the "valorisation, access to, protection, and sustainability of cultural heritage". It is also in line with the research developed at the research Unit Vicarte, which is part of the Associate laboratory, that aims to promote excellence in the study of glass and ceramics at a local and global level, within the two research lines "Development of new sustainable materials" and "Making history through objects". The expertise of the successful candidate will significantly contribute to ongoing research projects and strengthen our institutional capabilities in these critical areas. Furthermore, the hire will enhance collaboration with external partners, foster academic-industry relationships, and contribute to the training of the next generation of researchers in Glass synthesis. This position reflects our commitment to innovation and scientific leadership, positioning NOVA FCT / VICARTE / Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes at the forefront of advancements in Glass and Ceramic materials and related disciplines.
