Position: Assistant Researcher on Biosensors and BioelectronicsJob Description: We are seeking a highly motivated Assistant Researcher in the field of Biosensors and Bioelectronics to join our dynamic team at NOVA FCT / CENIMAT|i3N. The researcher will be responsible for conducting cutting-edge research to advance our understanding regarding bioelectronics, including designing and synthesizing novel sustainable bio-based substrates for bioelectronic applications.Key Responsibilities:Design and execute experiments to synthesize new biocompatible substrates with specific electric properties for bioelectronic applications.Investigating the sustainable additive manufacturing of biomaterial-based devices in bioengineering and biosensing.Collaborate with CENIMAT|i3N team members and interdisciplinary teams to integrate findings into broader research initiatives.Contribute to the Bioelectronics and Biosensors laboratory at CENIMAT|i3N, including the installation of new equipment for bioprinting and training of new users.Contribute to the publication of research findings in reputable scientific journals.Support the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students participating in research activities related to bioelectronics and biosensors.Scientific Profile: The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:Ph.D. in Materials Science, Bioengineering, or related fields with a strong focus on bioengineering and biomimetics. To have proven expertise in designing and synthesizing nature-derived bioengineering devices, with a track record of successful projects.Have extensive knowledge in additive manufacturing, including biofabrication and laser-based technologies.Proficient in utilizing advanced analytical techniques for material characterization (e.g., Atomic Force Microscopy, Raman, Confocal, and Electron Microscopy).Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets and draw meaningful conclusions.Strong publication record in reputable scientific journals, demonstrating the ability to contribute novel insights to the field.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.Rationale:The recruitment for this position aligns with the strategic goals of NOVA FCT/CENIMAT|i3N to advance research excellence in Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biomimetic devices. The intersection of Biofabrication and Bioelectronics represents a burgeoning area of scientific exploration with promising applications in drug discovery, materials science, and sustainable technologies. The successful candidate’s expertise will significantly contribute to ongoing research projects and to strengthen our institutional capabilities in these critical areas. Furthermore, the hire will promote collaboration with external partners, foster academic-industry relationships, and contribute to training the next generation of researchers in Material Science and Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering. This position reflects our commitment to innovation and scientific leadership, positioning NOVA FCT/CENIMAT|i3N at the forefront of advancements in the field of Bioelectronics, Biosensors, and related disciplines. This position is integrated within the Materials for Electronics, Optoelectronics and Processes (MEON) group at CENIMAT|i3N, which is organized in three research areas (RA): RA#1 – Flexible and sustainable electronics; RA#2 – Energy harvesting, conversion and storage; RA#3 – Bioelectronic and biomedical devices. These are transversally supported by three Satellite RA (SRA): SRA#1 – Nanomaterials synthesis and deposition; SRA#2 – Micro and nanopatterning; SRA#3 – Advanced characterization. Bioelectronics and Biosensors then perfectly fits the purpose of RA#3, which currently does not have any researcher with a permanent position to assure stable research advances in the area. The impact of the knowledge generated in this position is also expected to extend to other groups at the Associated Laboratory CENIMAT|i3N, perfectly aligning with i3N thematic line “Biomedical Devices and Systems”, contributing to promote further synergies among the two hubs of i3N.
