Os vasos linfáticos situados sob o bolbo olfativo formam uma rede contínua que atravessa a lâmina crivosa, a partir da qual os nervos olfativos se estendem até à mucosa nasal, onde também se encontram densas redes linfáticas. O sistema olfativo constitui uma interface única em que as interações entre os sistemas nervoso e imunitário influenciam profundamente a estrutura, os circuitos e a imunidade do cérebro. No entanto, estas interações neurónio–imunidade–vasculatura nos gânglios linfáticos e na mucosa nasal permanecem pouco caracterizadas, em particular no que respeita aos seus efeitos sobre a imunidade cerebral e a resposta terapêutica.
