Summary

Job description :The Assistant Professor to be hired is expected to have a background in robotics, artificial intelligence, and control systems. This position reflects the DEEC-FCTUC interest in candidates able to demonstrate that their research activity may bring major research contributions to the area of field robotics (aerial, marine or ground). We are interested in candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, including mobile robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and control systems. The candidates are expected to complement and expand the existing research capabilities in the areas of robotic perception, guidance, and long-term navigation in natural environments. Rationale :The recent progress in robotics and related technologies, coupled with advancements in ML/AI, have significantly expanded the capabilities in many sectors, ranging from social robotics, assistive robotics, agricultural robots, ocean exploration, aerial surveillance, to advanced robot systems.The development and deployment of autonomous/intelligent robots (including but not limited to ground, aerial, space, maritime) present significant challenges, for example autonomy, reasoning, perception, flexibility, as well as societal challenges, including safety and transparency.The University of Coimbra is creating a new campus, by the Ocean, in Figueira da Foz, with a research strand focused on autonomous field robots able to operate in large ocean and aerial spaces. This research facility will complement and expand the robotics capacities currently existing in Coimbra (ISR-UC).The candidates are expected to demonstrate new and credible research plans on intelligent robotics, emphasizing topics that complement the existing DEEC/FCTUC research capabilities and have the vision to expand our research into the growing areas of ML/AI coupled with robotic systems. Scientific Profile :A PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or PhD in any other closely related field.Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.A strong background in Robotics, control systems, and/or relevant AI fields.A proven track record of impactful research publications in reputable scientific journals and conferences.Experience of participation in research projects.Experience in teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.The DEEC/UC also seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. Expectations :To conduct research that impacts the future of Field Robotics.Foster novel collaborations and create new research and career opportunities.Publish high-quality scientific papers in top-tier journals and flagship conferences related to robotics, control and AI.Experience of work in or in collaboration with companies/industry.Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, delivering engaging and informative lectures, seminars, and practical sessions.Mentor and supervise postgraduate research students, fostering their intellectual growth and research capabilities.Undertake management and administrative tasks relevant to the role, ensuring efficient operation within the academic department.

Beneficiaries

Within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, two types of beneficiaries are responsible for carrying out the projects and using the funding provided. Due to their similar role, the reference to these two types of beneficiaries has been simplified and unified under the term "Beneficiary".
The two types are::
  • Direct Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan that has been negotiated and approved by the European Union;
  • Final Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are approved following a selection process through Calls for Applications.

Call for applications

As part of the Call for Applications, submissions are requested to select the projects and final beneficiaries to whom funding will be awarded. Specific selection criteria are defined for each call, which must be reflected in the applications submitted and assessed.

The project is appraised on the basis of its compliance with the selection criteria laid down in the calls for applications, and a final score may be awarded, where applicable.

Final evaluation score

9,1
Important note

The components for calculating the assessment score can be found in the selection criteria document mentioned below.

Selection criteria

The funding selection criteria to which this project and its final beneficiary were subject and its score can be found in detail on the Recuperar Portugal platform.

Procurement

Beneficiaries representing public entities implement their project by signing one or more contracts with suppliers for goods or services through public procurement procedures.

To ensure and provide the utmost transparency in all these contracts, a list of the contracts that were signed under this project is available here, along with the information available on the Base.Gov platform. Please note that, according to the legislation in force at the time the contract was signed, some exceptions do not require the publication of the contracts signed on this platform, and, therefore, no information is available in such cases.
