Summary

The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon (FCUL) recognises the need to bolster its expertise in Marine Biology, particularly in Marine and Estuarine Ecology, Ecosystem Functioning, and Fisheries Ecology and Management. The appointment of an Assistant Researcher specialising in these areas is pivotal for advancing scientific understanding, promoting sustainable practices, and addressing contemporary challenges facing marine ecosystems and sustainable resource use.Recent European directives, including the European Green Deal´s mandate to develop a sustainable blue economy in the European Union and the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), underscore the urgent need to prioritise ocean conservation and sustainable resource management. Moreover, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 emphasises the importance of safeguarding marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning for the health of our planet.Additionally, ocean conservation is integral to achieving several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 14 (Life Below Water), emphasising marine resource conservation and sustainable use. Additionally, ocean health is interconnected with other SDGs, such as SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), highlighting the broad societal impact of marine conservation efforts.The prospective Assistant Researcher will be tasked with conducting cutting-edge research in Marine and Estuarine Ecology, Ecosystem Functioning, and Fisheries Ecology and Management. Their responsibilities will include investigating the dynamics of marine ecosystems, assessing the impact of human activities on marine biodiversity, improving the assessment of fisheries stocks, and developing strategies for sustainable fisheries management.The ideal candidate for this position should hold a Ph.D. in Marine Biology or a related field, with expertise in Marine and Estuarine Ecology, Ecosystem Functioning, and Fisheries Ecology and Management. They should demonstrate a strong publication record, experience in interdisciplinary research, and a commitment to promoting sustainability. Additionally, they should possess excellent communication skills and a commitment to teaching and outreach.In conclusion, hiring an Assistant Researcher specialising in Fisheries Ecology and Management at MARE, FCUL/University of Lisbon, is essential for advancing scientific knowledge, promoting sustainability, and addressing the challenges facing marine ecosystems. By investing in this position, FCUL and the University of Lisbon will strengthen its research capacity, contribute to EU directives and SDGs, and empower future generations to protect and conserve our oceans for generations to come.

Beneficiaries

Within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, two types of beneficiaries are responsible for carrying out the projects and using the funding provided. Due to their similar role, the reference to these two types of beneficiaries has been simplified and unified under the term "Beneficiary".
The two types are::
  • Direct Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan that has been negotiated and approved by the European Union;
  • Final Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are approved following a selection process through Calls for Applications.

Call for applications

As part of the Call for Applications, submissions are requested to select the projects and final beneficiaries to whom funding will be awarded. Specific selection criteria are defined for each call, which must be reflected in the applications submitted and assessed.

The project is appraised on the basis of its compliance with the selection criteria laid down in the calls for applications, and a final score may be awarded, where applicable.

Final evaluation score

9,1
Important note

The components for calculating the assessment score can be found in the selection criteria document mentioned below.
