Summary

The Assistant Researcher will lead research activities focused on insect valorisation, with a primary emphasis on creating value from insects as both food and feed, while also obtaining new ingredients with zero waste. The candidate should conduct experiments and studies to explore the potential of insects as sustainable sources of proteins, lipids, chitosan, and other valuable bioactive compounds.The integration of the Assistant Researcher position within CBQF, under collaboration and co-funding with INSECT BASED FEED & FOOD, LDA will bring several benefits both entities and will allow to address Global Challenges. Insects offer a sustainable solution to pressing global challenges such as food security, resource scarcity, and waste reduction. By valorising insects as food and feed sources and obtaining new ingredients with zero waste, the research conducted by the Assistant Researcher contributes to addressing these challenges in a meaningful way. The research conducted by the Assistant Researcher will contribute to advancing scientific knowledge in the field of insect quality, processing, and valorization. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of insect composition and quality and optimizing processing techniques, the Assistant Researcher will contribute to unlocking the full potential of insects as valuable resources. The Assistant Researcher will play a key role in driving innovation in the food and feed industries by developing novel applications for insect-derived ingredients. By combining scientific expertise with creativity and innovation, the Assistant Researcher will contribute to the development of sustainable and market-driven solutions. Collaborating with INSECT BASED FEED & FOOD, LDA, in a co-funding model will translate research findings into tangible products and solutions that align with market demands and sustainability goals.The candidate for the Assistant Researcher position should hold a Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology or a related field, with a proven track record in insect valorization. They should have extensive experience in developing and optimizing processing techniques for insects to efficiently extract valuable components, prioritizing factors such as yield, purity, and sustainability. Proficiency in advanced analytical techniques such as chromatography is essential for characterizing the chemical composition, structure, and functionality of insect-derived ingredients. Moreover, the candidate should be adept at performing bioassays and functional assays to assess the nutritional, functional, and safety aspects of insect-based products, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.In addition to technical expertise, the ideal candidate should demonstrate strong research and project management skills, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary research projects and effectively collaborate with industry partners. They should exhibit creativity and innovation in developing novel applications for insect-based ingredients, while upholding principles of sustainability and zero waste. The candidate should also possess excellent communication and collaboration skills, enabling them to engage with stakeholders and translate research findings into practical solutions that address societal needs and market demands. Additionally, proficiency in mentoring and project leadership is desirable, as the candidate may be required to guide junior researchers and lead research initiatives independently.

Beneficiaries

Within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, two types of beneficiaries are responsible for carrying out the projects and using the funding provided. Due to their similar role, the reference to these two types of beneficiaries has been simplified and unified under the term "Beneficiary".
The two types are::
  • Direct Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan that has been negotiated and approved by the European Union;
  • Final Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are approved following a selection process through Calls for Applications.

Call for applications

As part of the Call for Applications, submissions are requested to select the projects and final beneficiaries to whom funding will be awarded. Specific selection criteria are defined for each call, which must be reflected in the applications submitted and assessed.

The project is appraised on the basis of its compliance with the selection criteria laid down in the calls for applications, and a final score may be awarded, where applicable.

Final evaluation score

9,1
Important note

The components for calculating the assessment score can be found in the selection criteria document mentioned below.

Selection criteria

The funding selection criteria to which this project and its final beneficiary were subject and its score can be found in detail on the Recuperar Portugal platform.
