The research performed by the Structural Mechanics and Structures Scientific Area at Técnico relies on advanced numerical models and experimental work carried out at the Laboratory of Structures and Resistance of Materials (LERM). These endeavors are pivotal for investigating Seismic behavior of structures. The recruitment of an Assistant Professor in Structural Mechanics and Structures aims to ensure continuity within the research group RG6 of CERIS (Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability) in the area of Earthquake Engineering. This is crucial as all members of the group are of comparable ages and are in close proximity to retirement, having been actively engaged in the field. The intended hire seeks to address future retirements and potential knowledge loss within CERIS, particularly in seismic risk and seismic analysis. Key focus areas include seismic risk, seismic assessment and retrofit of existing structures, seismic design of new structures. Additionally, expertise is sought in multi-hazard vulnerability assessment of urban areas. Other topics of importance include vulnerability analysis for seismic risk management in urban areas, large-scale seismic vulnerability assessment approaches, structural health monitoring of critical structures and built cultural heritage. Furthermore, the aim is to spearhead research in emerging fields like leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in structural analysis, which is crucial for upcoming major construction projects in the country. It is noteworthy that CERIS, with its excellent rating, and RG6, with a wealth of experience, are dedicated to scientific and technological research, innovation, and dissemination. Hiring an Assistant Professor in Structural Mechanics and Structures will bolster theoretical and experimental research in Earthquake Engineering. Appointing an Assistant Professor in this area is certainly a significant contribution to the achievement of the goals of DECivil and CERIS, ensuring the continuity of skills in the short and medium term and avoiding abrupt disruptions due to a lack of human resources. Therefore, this is an essential element for advancing cutting-edge research and ensuring quality postgraduate education. The candidate is expected to possess appropriate academic qualifications for research and teaching in Earthquake Engineering. The last five years of the candidate´s research should demonstrate capabilities for the development, sustainability, and advancement of RG6 at CERIS, specifically in Earthquake Engineering. Técnico will launch an international competition for hiring the most talented Assistant Professor for this position, that will be largely advertised through national and European EU platforms and web portals. Finally, full professors in the field are familiar with potential candidates´ backgrounds, and a formal scouting process is underway, including seminars and interviews with individuals who align well with the desired profile.
Beneficiaries
The two types are::
- Direct Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan that has been negotiated and approved by the European Union;
- Final Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are approved following a selection process through Calls for Applications.
Call for applications
As part of the Call for Applications, submissions are requested to select the projects and final beneficiaries to whom funding will be awarded. Specific selection criteria are defined for each call, which must be reflected in the applications submitted and assessed.
The project is appraised on the basis of its compliance with the selection criteria laid down in the calls for applications, and a final score may be awarded, where applicable.
Final evaluation score
The components for calculating the assessment score can be found in the selection criteria document mentioned below.
