Summary

The Art History Institute (IHA) elected as two of its core areas of research the fields of ‘Museums, Collections, Exhibitions and Markets’ and ‘Public Policies, Communities and Territories’, which are closely related to two of the NOVA School of Humanities and Social Sciences (NOVA FCSH) primary domains of strategic development for the 2023-2030 term: ‘Arts and Humanities’ and ‘Society and Policies’. This domain further articulates with the Associate Laboratory IN2PAST Thematic Lines ‘Cultural Transfers, Public Policies on Memory and Inclusive Citizenship‘ and ‘Museums, Monuments and Their Collections’. Considering these strategic scientific convergent lines, IHA seeks to expand and stabilise its research team by opening a Chair in ‘Artistic Practices, Museums and Citizenship’. The successful candidate will develop research as a full member of the IHA and IN2PAST while contributing to the teaching activities of the Art History Department. She/he must have a solid Art History-based curriculum and a strong track-record of research work on processes related art history nourished by other areas of knowledge production like activism and post and de-colonial studies, as well as expertise in the expanded field of museum studies. Three Research Groups at IHA, Contemporary Art Studies (CASt), Museum Studies (MuSt) and Art Theory, Historiography and Criticism (ArtTHC) make these convergent fields of study particularly relevant. Key Responsibilities are: Contributing to the university’s productive scientific community, namely by engaging in IHA and IN2PAST strategic plans, as well as in the development of NOVA FCSH’s ‘Arts and Humanities’ and ‘Society and Policies’ strategic areas. Expanding the horizons of the IHA and IN2PAST research team and ensuring its long-term stability. Design and conduct independent research on ‘Artistic Practices, Museums and Citizenship’. Disseminating high-quality research outputs by publishing in recognised international peer-reviewed journals and public platforms and proactively seeking funding to support research initiatives. Collaborating with the IHA and IN2PAST Management Offices, namely in coordination tasks. Collaborating within the Art History Department by designing and teaching courses on Artistic Practices, Museums and Citizenship at MA and PhD levels. These courses must actively contribute to affirming and developing the best educational practices tailored for undergraduate and graduate levels. Generating and Supervising students by providing mentoring and advice at all levels. Establish meaningful collaborative work with academic and non-academic institutions, setting the ground for future partnerships and social engagement. Scientific Profile is: PhD in Art History or other relevant related area. Scientific expertise and practice in the field of Artistic Practices, Museums and Citizenship’. Evidence of conducting impactful research in the cultural public sphere. Certified experience in designing and implementing research projects, namely projects competitively funded by national and/or international research agencies. Certified participation in funded projects research teams, either as project leader and/or team member. Outstanding research qualities demonstrated through an established track record of relevant publications, including peer-reviewed, international journals, books, reports and other relevant outlets Active member of relevant networks in the research topics covered. Involvement with society and knowledge transfer to the public, private or non-profit sector and the general public. Experience in teaching and supervising MA and PhD Students while giving evidence of his/her commitment towards developing a research-based teaching approach with a cross-disciplinary focus. Rationale: Recruiting a researcher for an IHA CHAIR on ‘Artistic Practices, Museums and Citizenship’ is scientifically crucial for NOVA FCSH and the IHA. This position focuses on analysing and reflecting on the crucial role that artistic practices, curatorship, and exhibition play in constructing national identities and collective memories in museums. These institutions are widely recognized as knowledge-based organizations, and as such, they are related to processes of activism and citizenship. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong track-record of research in this sphere of work and demonstrate his/her willingness to reinforce IHA’s research by responding to some of these key scientific challenges and to complement IHA’s and IN2PAST’s research expertise on these subjects, enhancing their research results. At the same time, this new research will significantly add to the Institute’s strong commitment to art historical education. The Art History Department’s teaching programs at the graduate and post-graduate levels will be enriched by scientific research on these subjects. At the same time, IHA’s research will also benefit from the MA dissertations and PhD theses it will host.
