Summary

Job descriptionHighly motivated and experienced Assistant researcher with a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry and X-ray crystallography studies of DNA repair enzymes, and knowledge and experience in the areas of spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The prospective employee is expected to lead research projects focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying Base Excision Repair (BER), and how these mechanisms can assist organisms under stress conditions (e.g. radiation). The long-term goal is to use the knowledge generated to develop novel tools for improved diagnostics and treatment of human diseases. Key responsibilitiesThe main task of the prospective employee is to 1) develop and conduct research addressing fundamental biological questions related to DNA repair (in particular BER) by using an integrated structural biology approach and enzymes from bacteria and humans, 2) lead, manage and execute research projects, and secure funding for future projects, 3) publish achieved results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and disseminate results in both national and international scientific meetings and congresses, 4) teach at postgraduate levels (master´s and PhD) and supervise students at both levels as well as post-doctorates, 5) collaborate with both internal, national and international research groups, 6) participate actively in science outreach activities. Scientific profile requiredThe prospective employee should have 1) a PhD in medical biology or related areas, 2) large experience as an independent scientist, 3) proven experience in i) the use of molecular biology techniques (including cloning and protein expression and purification), ii) establishing and using biochemical and biophysical methods (spectroscopy and electrochemistry) for protein characterisation, and iii) structural biology techniques (X-ray crystallography), 4) a strong track of scientific publication in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, namely as corresponding author, 5) demonstrated an ability to raise funding for both fundamental research and innovation projects from both national and international funding sources, 6) a proven record a) in student supervision (bachelor, master and Ph.D.), b) as a jury member of both master and PhD thesis defenses and c) scientific journal and project proposal peer-reviewing activities, 7) teaching experience at master level and 8) excellent communication and organizational skills. Rational for hiringHiring an Assistant researcher in Structural Biology Studies of DNA repair enzymes is crucial to improve our fundamental understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying BER. The candidate´s expertise within the field of DNA repair and experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry and X-ray crystallography will enable the discovery of so far unknown aspects of DNA repair mechanisms. This is essential to understand the development and treatment of cancer and neurological diseases related to this crucial cellular process. The candidate´s knowledge and experience within the field of protein structure determination will also be highly important to maintain and further develop structural biology methodologies at ITQB NOVA, and train young students who are new to this field. The proven expertise of the selected candidate and his/her track record in securing funding from both national and international funding agencies will make sure that ITQB NOVA is at the forefront of the DNA repair field internationally. Moreover, the fundamental knowledge will in a longer-term perspective have economic and social impact, decreasing the health care system costs by more efficient disease treatment and improving overall health and well-being.

Beneficiaries

Within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, two types of beneficiaries are responsible for carrying out the projects and using the funding provided. Due to their similar role, the reference to these two types of beneficiaries has been simplified and unified under the term "Beneficiary".
The two types are::
  • Direct Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan that has been negotiated and approved by the European Union;
  • Final Beneficiaries are those whose funding and projects to implement are approved following a selection process through Calls for Applications.

Call for applications

As part of the Call for Applications, submissions are requested to select the projects and final beneficiaries to whom funding will be awarded. Specific selection criteria are defined for each call, which must be reflected in the applications submitted and assessed.

The project is appraised on the basis of its compliance with the selection criteria laid down in the calls for applications, and a final score may be awarded, where applicable.
