Job description: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Earth Sciences Researcher to join our dynamic team at NOVA FCT/ GeoBioTec. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting cutting-edge research in the areas of Sustainable Geoenergy, with a specific focus on Geology and Subsurface Energy Storage. Key tasks include investigating the geological controls that can support net-zero energy storage in the subsurface (e.g., Compressed Air Energy Storage, Hydrogen), Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and explore its combined applications with Geothermal energy. The researcher will contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and the development of innovative solutions in the field. Responsibilities: 1) Investigate the geological controls that underpin the thermodynamic constraints for Compressed Air Energy Storage in porous media or salt caverns. 2) Investigate the structural, depositional, petrophysical, and geomechanical characteristics of rocks, that can sustain the charge and discharge of gases in subsurface reservoirs. 3) Conduct an in-depth analysis that explains how distinct types of gas plumes form, propagate, and react in a subsurface reservoir. 4) Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate findings into broader research initiatives. 5) Contribute to the publication of research findings in reputable scientific journals. 6) Apply for national and international competitive calls for funding. 7) Stay abreast of the latest developments in Geoenergy and related fields. Scientific profile: The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes: 1) Ph.D. in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field with a strong focus on Sustainable Energy Storage in the subsurface. 2) Proven expertise in interpreting multichannel seismic reflection datasets, wireline logs, and petrophysics. 3) Extensive knowledge of salt tectonics, evolution of depositional systems, basin dynamics, and structural geology. 4) Proficiency in generating meaningful 3D static and dynamic models for energy storage solutions. 5) Strong commitment in the strength the academy-industry relationship. 6) Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
