Os CET visam suprir as necessidades verificadas, no tecido empresarial, ao nível de quadros intermédios, capazes de responder aos desafios colocados por um mercado de trabalho em permanente mudança e acentuado desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico e apresentam-se como uma alternativa válida para a qualificação de técnicos especializados e competentes. Estes cursos constituem-se como uma formação técnica pós-secundária, e têm como objetivos: • Promover a requalificação e reconversão profissional com vista à reinserção e progressão no mercado de trabalho; • Aprofundar as competências profissionais tendo em vista o exercício de um melhor desempenho profissional e uma melhor adaptação às mudanças tecnológicas e organizacionais; • Consolidar os percursos de formação inicial, reforçando a qualificação profissional e as competências técnicas especializadas; • Estimular o prosseguimento de estudos para o ensino superior. Os CET obedecem aos referenciais de competências e de formação associados ao nível 5 de qualificação do QNQ, que integram o Catálogo Nacional de Qualificações (CNQ).
