Pretende-se com este trabalho a construção de uma interface Resíduos Urbanos em números, assente num sistema de reporte de resíduos, robusto, simples e atualizado que visa: (1) Garantir a produção da informação, fiável a atualizada, necessária ao acompanhamento on time do estado da produção e gestão de resíduos, a nível nacional, por SGRU e município, por forma a aferir o cumprimento dos seus objetivos e metas e monitorizar a implementação da estratégia possibilitando o ajuste e/ou aditamento de medidas complementares ou alternativas atempadamente, quer pelos agentes do setor, quer pela Administração; (2) Assegurar uma forma privilegiada de comunicar dados atualizados em matéria de resíduos urbanos (a nível nacional, com detalhe por SGRU e os municípios), garantindo assim que os cidadãos e outros produtores de resíduos dispõem de informação sobre o estado atual e evolução dos resíduos urbanos no seu concelho, dos resultados das suas ações, induzindo a mudança de comportamentos e efetuando pressão para a adoção de medidas pelo município; (3) Disponibilizar informação atualizada à comunicação social e Organizações Não Governamentais do Ambiente, de forma a tornar mais transparente este setor, reforçando o escrutínio e estimulando a cidadania; (4) Criar um sistema que permite a comparação de dados entre municípios, estimulando uma competição saudável e a adoção de medidas com vista à prevenção de resíduos e uma melhor gestão dos mesmos.
