The Jelly4Bone project aims to address significant challenges in bone tissue regeneration by developing advanced hydrogel systems inspired by mussel adhesive proteins (MAPs) and incorporating bioactive nanoparticles, particularly gallium-doped bioactive glass nanoparticles (GaBGNPs). The objectives of this project are multifaceted and ambitious, striving to surpass the current state of the art in several key areas. The Jelly4Bone project intends to enhance the adhesive properties of hydrogels in wet environments, such as biological surfaces, by incorporating catechol groups by chemical reaction into natural polymers namely hyaluronic acid and chitosan. This approach draws inspiration from the exceptional adhesive properties of MAPs found in mussels in adverse conditions, aiming to develop hydrogels with superior tissue adhesion and improved cell response. By addressing this challenge, the research aims to revolutionize the field of biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The development of multifunctional mussel-inspired hydrogels by integrating bioactive nanoparticles, specifically gallium-doped BGNPs, into their composition. These nanoparticles have shown promising therapeutic properties, including the ability to stimulate bone formation, and angiogenesis, and exhibit anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. By incorporating these innovative nanoparticles into hydrogels, the research seeks to enhance both cell response and osteoconductivity, thereby significantly advancing the capabilities of hydrogel-based scaffolds for bone regeneration. The development of in situ-gelling systems will enhance the ease of application and adaptability of hydrogel-based therapies in clinical settings a versatile and user-friendly solution for bone regeneration. The Jelly4Bone addresses important challenges in bone tissue regeneration with novel concepts and approaches.
