Support measures

Learn about the support and initiatives in Portugal to help families fight energy poverty.

Support for better housing

Consumer support measures in the fight against energy poverty range from financial support programmes to the social energy tariff.

Financial support programmes provide funds to improve housing conditions and purchase energy-efficient equipment, improving home comfort and reducing energy consumption.

The social energy tariff helps reduce the financial burden on vulnerable consumers allowing them to access essential energy services without compromising other basic needs.

Support

Some support, particularly financial support, is often made available during specific periods and requires an application process.

The application process allows the organisation providing the support to assess the eligibility of applicants on the basis of specific criteria, in order to ensure that they are distributed fairly and transparently.

Social Energy Tariff

The Social Energy Tariff is a subsidy granted to economically vulnerable consumers, helping to reduce the amount they pay in electricity and natural gas bills.

Eligibility for this support is determined by income and socioeconomic deprivation, as assessed by the social benefits received.

The tariff is awarded automatically and is reflected directly on the bill, with the discount being the same for all consumers, regardless of the market they are in.

Citizen focused initiatives

Energy literacy is a fundamental tool for transforming energy consumption patterns.

There are various citizen support initiatives that include training, awareness-raising and counselling, giving consumers the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about energy consumption, and it is an important step towards building a more conscious, inclusive and sustainable society.
